Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Creative Slider places a rich variety of
creative effects at your disposal View larger.
The slim and attractive way to bring your subjects closer

Nikon design goes beyond slim contours and sophisticated operation by engineering a precision wide-angle 10x zoom, NIKKOR ED glass lens into the thinnest camera in its class.* With wide through super-telephoto coverage, the creative freedom afforded by this new lens forms a perfect blend with the other creative features of the COOLPIX S8000.

* Among compact cameras equipped with an optical zoom lens capable of zooming in at 10x or more as of December 29, 2009 (according to research conducted by Nikon Corporation).

Creative Slider is the fun new way to express your creative side

Creative Slider places a rich variety of creative effects at your disposal when shooting in Auto Mode. Adjust brightness, saturation and color tone using the handy Rotary Multi Selector, all while watching a real-time preview on the 7.5 cm (3-in.) LCD monitor.

Four advanced image stabilization features ensure sharper results

Advanced flash control combines with lens shift VR image stabilization, advanced Motion Detection, and ISO 1600 capability at any image size up to its maximum (4320 x 3240), to help ensure consistently sharp results.

VR image Stabilisation: produce
blur-free images View larger.
VR image Stabilisation & Motion Detection

Nikon VR technologies help you produce blur-free images when shooting in low light or unsteady conditions. Some COOLPIX models offer Lens or Sensor shift VR, which compensates for camera shake to deliver sharp images and steadier framing with the monitor. Other models offer Electronic VR, which applies movement data to image-processing to turn blurred images into beautifully clear results. Motion Detection automatically selects a faster shutter speed and higher ISO (light sensitivity) setting to compensate for subject movement or camera shake.

High-Definition movie recording

A dedicated Movie button makes it easy to record up to 1.5 hours* of 720p HD movie with stereo sound. (*Recording stops automatically after 29 minutes. This figure is based on in-house testing standards and stated for recording at 25¡C with a fully charged EN-EL12 battery. Actual results may vary greatly depending on factors that include differences in ambient temperature, and the amount of zoom and autofocus operations used.)

Clear Colour Display

Nikon's innovative Clear Colour Display technology improves visibility for a more vivid, clearer image preview and playback.

High Sensitivity: capture subjects
beautifully in low light View larger.
High Sensitivity & Scene Auto Selector

High ISO capability helps capture subjects beautifully in low light, without compromising natural light or requiring long exposure time. By enabling the selection of faster shutter speeds, it also makes it easier to capture fast-moving subjects with greater clarity. NikonÕs Scene Auto Selector provides quick, carefree picture-taking in a variety of situations by determining the subject and surrounding conditions, and then automatically selecting the appropriate scene mode for the shot.

Face-priority AF & Smile Mode

Whether photographing individuals or groups, Face-priority AF detects as many as 12 faces and adjusts exposure across the frame to help ensure beautiful portraits at a press of the shutter button. Smile Mode automatically releases the shutter when your subject smiles to help faithfully record the moment.

Blink Warning, Blink Proof & In-Camera Red-Eye Fix

Blink Warning notifies you when a subject blinks during exposure, allowing you to immediately retake the shot. Blink Proof shoots two pictures and saves the one in which the subjectÕs eyes are wide open. This function automatically analyzes the captured image and corrects any perceived red-eye effect before saving the image to memory. Some models also offer pre-flash.

Subject Tracking & Skin Softening

Subject Tracking enhances your shooting experience by following the movement of your subject. Leveraging built-in face-detection technology to ensure smooth skin tone on the face of subjects, Skin Softening can be applied in a choice of three adjustment levels.

I bought this as I find my Nikon SLR a bit large to carry around just "on spec". I didn't expect the quality of pictures and the comparative ease of use though. There are quite a lot of menus, but no more and no more complicated than many similar cameras. I'm very glad I bought this camera and I can very happily recommend the S8000 to anyone who wants a simple to use camera which is capable of taking excellent sharp pictures. Recently I used it in "Close up" mode photographing insects on flowers alongside my Nikon SLR with a Micro Nikkor lens. The Micro Nikkor won on depth of field when using a tripod, but the S8000 won on ease of taking hand held quick close ups. Depth of field not so great and not so controllable as a SLR set on manual, but the sharpness delivered by the superb lens and Vibration reduction system is remarkable.
There is no optical viewfinder, as with many compact digitals now, so the screen although large, suffers from direct sunlight shining on it. Taking pictures with the bright sun behind you can be a bit trying. It's not a reason not to buy though. What this camera achieves at this price is really amazing.
Also I must add that the delivery service from "discounteddigital" was brilliant. Ordered Tuesday afternoon, received notice of dispatch within 2 hours and delivery by Wednesday afternoon, and this was the "Standard" cheap delivery option. What do these guys do for Express? The MD helicopters it round personally perhaps?

Excellent camera. Pictures the best, very good value for money. Easy to use. Zoom fantastic. Only one problem, but have got used to it, I hold the camera with 2 hands with a finger on the top left and right hand side. The flash is on the top left side and it pops up when require or doesn't because my finger is there. So remember to hold the camera at the sides only. This is the only fault i can find.

Slim, good-looking 'super-zoom' camera in the coolpix range. The Nikon is a solid entry into this 'super-zoom' section of the market. Simply aim and shoot with auto mode or choose a scene if you prefer. The camera had 720 HD video(zoom not functional during video filming although you can zoom to appropriate level then hit record), and 14.2 mega-pixel stills. The focus/fix is 'rapid with 'DSLR' entry level quality. The LCD screen is superior to most screens which normally have 230,000 pixels (some have 400,00 pixels plus such as the Panasonic TZ-10) to view during playback. (in fact the LCD screen on this camera is over 900,000 pixels, the same as a '$8000 high-end Nikon camera) and viewing playback of photos taken is very satisfying. The lens is NIKKOR quality and includes ED lenses (means some lenses are extra-low dispersion glass and very accurate when passing an image/light through them and gives more clarity). The pictures are above average quality and would say beyond the 'snapper' level of some cheaper cameras. If you enjoy 'close-up' or Macro shots then this camera will go as close as 1cm with super crisp quality shots. (most cameras only manage as close as 3cm or sometimes 5cm) so if close-up'is essential then the s8000 Nikon may be the one! There are no real manual controls so it is a 'point and shoot' specialist although in auto mode you do have a 'creative slider' which means you can enhance the colour, brightness hue of an image and view it on the screen before you take the shot. Buy this camera if you need a very attractive 'point and shoot' super-zoom 'range-topping coolpix camera. (which gives pleasing stills and good HD video).

As I expected, prompt delivery and excellent service from Amazon.co.uk. Item arrived in a bigger package secured by brown paper inside the next day by express delivery, no complains here.
The camera works smoothly, very good photos in the light. However in the darker ambience its pixeled and not as sharp, you can still get on top of this by adjusting the settings (too many settings)
Overall doesn't need a professional photographer, just some common sense and knowing your way around the menu.

One downside, which is not related to amazon. This camera comes with a one year standard warranty from Nikon, a new offer of 2 years warranty is currently out for cameras purchased before 2007. This is managed by an external company, when i tried to register for the 2 years warranty it was told that this particular model is not on their list as yet as it is a new product and asked me to call in 2 weeks, putting in mind that you have a 30 days window for registering the product for the extended warranty that doesn't leave me much time.

HD movie recording is superb and after playing directly from the camera I was even happier. It comes equipped with a mini HDMI socket, but not a cable. AV cable is included

So if you are going to buy consider 1- A big SDHC card preferably class 6 not less than 8GB ( 16 GB will give you either 1 hour of full HD or around 4000 14MP photos) 2- A mini HDMI cable 3- A case that fits (camera dimensions can be found in the ad)

I would definitely recommend it)

I bought this to replace the excellent S3000 because of the 10X zoom and it performs superbly. Bigger than the S3000 it is still small enough to sit at the bottom of my handbag until needed. The scenes modes produce good images - used indoor and snow and very pleased with result.
