5.0 out of 5 stars Nikon 18.5mm Lens 21 Jan 2013
Colour Name:Black|Verified Purchase
In short this is an excellent little lens.

I wanted to use it to capture more natural looking portrait shots indoors, especially of my two-year-old daughter. The problem I had with the standard lenses was my daughter would never stand still long enough to take a shot using the slower shutter speeds I needed for indoor shooting without the use of the flash. This lens is ideal because using good light from the windows or plenty of incandesant overhead lighting I get perfect shots every time.

If I flick my J1 in to Apeture Mode I'm getting shutter speeds of 250 - 2000 using an f1.8 apeture shooting indoors. This is during the day with average diffused light from windows. Shooting like this I get that lovely background blur too (this is easily the best feature of this lens). Indoors of an evening the shutter has to slow down to around 100 so the pictures can get blury if your subject has ants in their pants - in which case I just flick to Shutter Mode and change the ISO if I can't get enough light or just use burst shooting mode.

Before I bought the lens I was a little worried about using it for portraits as it's not in that acclaimed 80-100mm focal length, but after reading other reviews and seeing the results for myself it's perfect for this task.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great portrait lens 7 May 2014
Colour Name:Black|Verified Purchase
Having the standard 10 to 30 mm zoom lens fitted on the Nikon 1 J1, I was looking for a reasonably priced lens with a larger aperture for indoor, low light situations including portraiture. This lens gives first class crisp, sharp images with outstanding detail. I have seen professionals on YouTube giving their personal impressions of this lens, and they coincide with mine. A truly brilliant lens which is excellent value for money.

If you can possible afford another lens for your V1, or J1 camera, this is the one to get.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just have to love this lens! 5 Sep 2013
By Grumpy
Colour Name:Silver|Verified Purchase
I am very impressed with this lens. I'm not into sharpness charts or anything like that, preferring to judge on normal images and this lens is, in my opinion, quite sharp even when wide open. At f/1.8 it is quite fast of course and ideal for low light, which is the main reason I bought it.
It will focus close, just a few inches from the subject and so is good for flowers, etc. I have also used a 10mm extension tube with this lens and had good results (very close-up!). All of this on auto focus, as in common with other Nikon 1 lenses it has no manual focus (this has to be done via the camera, a slow process).
Despite the small sensor size of the camera, this lens is capable of blurring backgrounds satisfactorily and can give some rich images.
This lens is now more or less permanently on my V1, the original 10-30mm hardly getting a look in and I am very pleased with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good extra lens 2 Aug 2013
Colour Name:Black|Verified Purchase
f/1.8 aperture really allows photos with reduce depth of focus which is main reason I purchased it. Also less need for flash in low light conditions. Good every day lens though slight restriction wide angle wise - this is not normally a problem for me. Very compact if you need to carry it around with alternative lens fitted to camera.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Nikon 1 system lens to date 17 April 2013
By Lee
Colour Name:Black|Verified Purchase
This is the best Nikon 1 lens to date. It's very sharp even wide open. It's great in low light and it provides usefully shallow depth of field for portraits. This lens now lives on my camera. It's a bit expensive for what it is but arguably the same could be said for all of the Nikon 1 lenses.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great portrait lens. 28 Dec 2012
By Drn1970
Colour Name:White|Verified Purchase
Fab lens on both my j1 and v1. Allows shallow depth of field with aperture of f1.8 and great in low light where the ISO stays relatively low for clean image quality!

An essential lens for the Nikon 1 series cameras!
