Product Description

Product Description

Close-up view of the Monarch 5 binoculars from underneath.
ED glass, dielectric high-reflective mirror coating, and phase correction coating work together to deliver sharp, bright images.

Taking full advantage of Nikon’s long successful history in optical technology, the Monarch 5 binoculars are evidence alone of the sophistication and expertise used to create such high performing sports optics. Designed to give lovers of the outdoors the chance to observe nature in all its spectacular glory, the Monarch 5 series reveal the smallest details, even under the most challenging light conditions. Whether you are stargazing, hiking up a rain swept mountain, or taking a voyage to spot marine life, these versatile, rugged binoculars will provide a clear view and captivate the moment perfectly.

Highly Acclaimed Performance

Exceptional image quality is realised across the Monarch 5 range with an advanced lens and roof prism construction. The objective lens diameters of 42mm or 56mm, combined with magnifications from 8x to 20x suit an array of situations to ensure you get the best possible view. Employing Nikon’s legendary ED glass to minimise chromatic aberrations, images of superior contrast and outstanding resolution are delivered. For excellent light transmission across the visible range, dielectric high-reflective multilayer prism coatings offer bright, sharp images with natural colours even in poor light conditions. A phase-correction coating is also applied to guarantee high resolution images at any distance.

Highly Durable

Made for intense use even under formidable conditions, Monarch 5 binoculars are extremely practical with all models using waterproof and fog-free construction. With a robust housing, the binoculars are waterproof up to 1 metre for 10 minutes, and to prevent fog or mould from forming inside the optical system, Nikon have used nitrogen gas, so a sudden change in weather won’t cloud your view.

Categories covered by the Monarch 5 Series
Outdoors, Camping, Hiking
Durability and portability are the perfect combination when enjoying rugged outdoor activities. Models which feature rubber armouring and waterproofing are ideal.
Birdwatching, Nature watching
7x-10x magnification is most suitable for nature viewing with 8x-12x models recommended for wildlife at a greater distance. A wide field of view is best for tracking birds in flight.
Marine Sports, Fishing
Durability and waterproofing are must-haves with a wide field of view advisable. For boat use, Vibration Reduction is recommended.
Astronomy
Large objective diameter, bright optics and distortion correction are recommended with waterproofing optional.
Spectacle Wearers
Models featuring high-eyepoint design permit eyewear users a comfortable, full field of view.

Operational Simplicity

Sometimes a split second is all you have for that dream sighting of a rare bird, but with decades of design experience, Nikon know how to engineer binoculars that are easy to use and quick to adjust. With this in mind, features have been included to provide effortless operation ensuring you get the very best from these accomplished sports optics. So whether you wear glasses, contact lenses, or use your binoculars without either, you’ll have the perfect view of your chosen subject. Compensating for differences between your left and right eye, the twist-type dioptre ring helps you achieve the sharpest possible image, while the high-eyepoint design provides a clear view of the entire field even when wearing spectacles. For comfort, the multi-click turn-and-slide rubber eyecups can either be positioned outwards to provide a good eye rest or retracted when using sunglasses or other eyewear.

Comfortable Viewing

Built to handle any environment, a fibreglass-reinforced polycarbonate body covered in rubber armouring for shock resistance means the Monarch 5 series is ready to withstand extreme use. The rubber housing also provides a firm, non-slip grip even in the wettest conditions. Flip-down objective lens caps protect the lenses from everyday knocks while allowing quick access when it’s time to jump into action. With a conveniently compact design, these lightweight binoculars are perfect for handheld outdoor use and can be worn around the neck with the wide neoprene strap provided or mounted on a tripod using the TRA-3 tripod adaptor supplied with the 16x56 and 20x56 models.

For a finely tuned view, witness the magnificence of nature through the superior lenses of Nikon's Monarch 5 binoculars.

Most of the reviews of these binoculars seem to be on American websites, where they seem to like them a lot by the way, so here are the thoughts of a British user. I became interested in birdwatching a few years ago and bought some Nikon Sporter binoculars which were a bargain at the time and seemed the equal of other budget priced optics I tried out. Then I made the mistake of trying some £500 ED glass binoculars at a RSPB reserve while on holiday this year and realised just what a difference better glass makes. I couldn't justify spending that sort of money so started looking around for the bargain alternative. Having found and bought the Monarch 5s I can report that they don't disappoint and are better in every respect than the Sporters I was using. The build quality of the budget model was good, as you'd expect from Nikon, but these are superbly put together and feel in a different league in use. They are excellent for spectacle wearers, having large diameter eyepiece lenses and twist down eyecups. I wear varifocals and find these binoculars very comfortable to use. As for Optical quality they exhibit none of the chromatic aberrations that plague the Sporters and every other pair of budget binoculars I've looked through and show huge improvements in clarity, sharpness and brightness of image. I visited my local RSPB reserve recently and compared the Monarch 5s directly to the £500 pair that made me look for something better in the first place and I can report that, to my eyes at least, the Monarch 5s outperformed them in every way. If I could find something negative to say about these binoculars I would say it, but I can't. They seem to be amazing value to me and I expect to get many years of use and pleasure out of them.

I have given these a 5 star rating because the quality is first class, they are easy to adjust to your eye requirements and very comfortable to hold for long periods. The optical quality is excellent. I am no expert but viewing the Orion Nebula you can see two distinct and very clear light sources, my old Bushnell's of equal Magnification just showed a fuzzy image. I bought these mainly for watching Wildlife and they have not disappointed even in low light conditions such as Dawn and Dusk. The image has remained clear and relatively bright (conditions dependant of course). The sealed lenses have never misted up even when walking straight out of a warm house late at night with them and have remained mist free in the field. The eye cups are easily adjustable and click lock, once adjusted remain firmly set. The focus Knob is easy to use and stiff enough not to alter without your input. The Kneck strap is quite comfy but mine came with a free back harness which is easy to use and very comfortable, it also allows you to use the tension in the elastic straps to further steady the Binoculars, well worth having. The harness also stops the Binoculars from bouncing around when moving. The supplied Neoprene and Cordura case offers very good protection from hard knocks, although one minor gripe is that not having it's own straps you have to lay it on the ground when the Binoculars are removed. That said I normally don't take the case because the Binoculars are fully waterproof. Others have had issues with the eye piece rain covers falling off all the time, I partially improved this issue by only having them connected to the strap by one loop (the non split one) rather than both and they remain in place better.Read more ›

At first I was tempted to choose a lightweight compact model with less magnification, but for a safari trip 8 x 42 is recommended (it is important to learn what the figures mean!) and I definitely made the right choice - these binocs are crystal clear and not too heavy, and opened up a new world. The fact that they are waterproof means that they also keep out fine sand or dust. Having returned from safari, I shall use these binocs for watching birds in the garden, as they are also good at near-range. Altogether a great purchase.

I'm no expert in optics but these offer a huge improvement over the run of the mill £60 pound types I've bought before. The price and delivery via Amazon were both excellent. They have some weight to them and the focus wheel operates with a feel of real quality. I can't believe just how bright and sharp the image appears given the modest 42mm objective lens.Only the lack of illustrations or instructions on how to fit the variety of straps supplied detracts.Overall these are well worth the premium and therefore offer sound value for money.
If I lost these for any reason I would not hesitate to replace with the same product from the same supplier.

I must admit that I am absolutely delighted with these binoculars. The image is crystal clear and they are quite light. They feel and look like the quality product they are. Just perfect. I suppose that for a thousand pounds more you might get better quality binoculars but maybe they would be 5% better. So don't bother, buy these!
