Although battery charger reviews don't always make for a scintillating read, our power providing friends nevertheless perform an important duty, and therefore deserve their time in the spotlight. Today i'm taking a look at Nikon's MH-18, an excellent little charger, designed to top up an EN-EL3 lithium-ion battery in a minimal amount of time.
Measuring 8.5 x 9 cms, the MH-18 is lightweight, and constructed from robust black plastic. With the three metal terminals facing towards the bottom of the MH-18, batteries slide easily onto the charger and lock into place with a nice solid click. When you flip the power on (via the wall socket), an orange blinking light shows that the charge is in progress - you'll know when the charge is complete when the light stops flashing and remains constantly on. In my experience, i've found that the charge time varies depending on the make of battery that you use, and also on how full the battery is at the time of charging. For official Nikon batteries, it takes around an hour and a half, whereas with third-party brands the time is quicker (probably due to the fact that they have a lower capacity).
The charger comes complete with a black power cord (AC 100-240 V) which fits into the side of the unit and measures around a metre in length. When in operation, the MH-18 remains fairly cool, and is completely silent. On the top of the unit there is a diagram showing the correct direction in which to insert the battery, whist the underside informs the user of the technical specifications.
I would always recommend using an official adaptor for charging your batteries, as some of the cheaper ones found on eBay (especially those originating from China), aren't fully safety checked and therefore represent a potential fire hazard. The MH-18 is a highly effective device which does its job quickly and effortless. Although looks aren't especially important in a battery charger, it's small and unobtrusive, and can't really be faulted.
