Much much better than the built in. I'm not saying there is no focus motor noise at all but its virtually indistinguisable depending on the ambient noise. Clever suspension and very compact.

Product sound quality is very poor, lot of static when in use. Would not recommend it, regardless that its a Nikon.

I bought this external microphone as a replacement for 2 faulty Rode products. So far so good, I shot the same scene with the external microphone and the built in microphone, the difference was definitely worth the money paid, no wind noise far superior sound quality etc. I also bought a Hahnel DC100 Windshield this does fit and again worth the few pounds I paid for it.
I will be on a steam train journey shortly and this will test this product fully. I will then add to this review and if it performs as expected then it will get 5 stars.

Updated review:-
Used the product with the Hahnel DC100 Windshield and would give 5 star no wind noise when leaning out of a train carriage window at high speed. Captured the noise of the steam engine without annoying wind noise.

It does what it is supposed to do - records all sounds with good quality. However, it fails to justify its main reason for existence - using an external mic in order to avoid the irritating sound of the AF-S focusing motor of the Nikkor AF-S lenses. The focusing noise of the lens's motor can still be heard quite loud even with the mic's sensitivity mode set to one step above Minimum. That is very disappointing as one of the selling points Nikon is advertising is exactly this - to eliminate noise from the AF-S motor when capturing HD video.
I thought for the asking price Nikon had some sort of a solution for this type of noise but they did not. There are other non-Nikon alternatives out there for less than half the Nikon price and since AF-S noise is still present when using the Nikon mic, I guess buying a cheaper alternative would make much more sense. My DSLR is Nikon D5100 with the kit Nikkor lens 18-55mm AF-S.

Does the job perfectly and is a nice size. the low frequency filter works well. still to try it out a bit more but first try went well in the D7000.

Sound quality is better than the camera but not enough to justify the price tag. It picks up noise from the lense focus and zoom mechanism.

Not pro quality (not at this price) but very sensitive, i.e. almost as good as my own ears. Performs well outdoors, but beware of noticeable white noise when using the low-cut filter (which, to be fair, you won't really need unless you're recording in a hurricane)
