When I bought my Nikon D300 in March 2008 I also purchased a lens hood - as you do. I was not impressed with its performance in preventing refraction of sunlight. I was even less impressed when bits of the rim fragmented. Last year it split. The repair held until March 2010 and now I have given up on it and purchased a replacement. But is it actually worth it? A lens hood should be rugged to withstand quite a lot of accidental maltreatment, but most of all it should actually keep out sunlight from the side. This doesn't do that and still costs a lot of money. I have wondered if another model would fit.
