5.0 out of 5 stars Best Handbook for the D70, 16 Jan 2005
By Mr. F. Kynaston (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I received this for a Christmas present having already purchased the Magic Lantern Guide a few weeks before. The difference between the two styles couldn't be more different. The author is obviously a keen D70 user. Every effort has been made in explaining how to get the best out of the camera, by the use of real life scenarios. Clear explanations are given as to how to set up the camera for particular situations. This is very useful for aspiring amateurs like myself who have only a basic knowledge of photography. I recommend this book over the Magic Lantern guide as the latter really only describes what the functions are, not how or where to make use of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars PIP guide 5, Nikon manual 0, 8 May 2005
By A. Lynch (Suffolk UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Thoroughly written explanation of all of the functions of the camera, and more importantly, usable settings based on the author's own experience as a pro user of the D70. I'd been out of the SLR game for about 15 years until I got a D70 through work. This book helped me roll back the years and I am shooting with as much enjoyment and enthusiasm as I did with my ancient (and sadly long gone) Nikkormat FT3.
The reason I bought the book is that the manual is so dense and technically written that even a passing glance led me straight to the fridge for a beer.
As an added extra the book is very popular with my youngest son who is autistic. He finds the combination of menus, buttons and animal pictures irresistable - we have to take turns reading the book. How's that for a recommendation?

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as anticipated...., 12 Feb 2005
I anticipated a book with helpful tips and a bit of varied information on the D70 to show me some new techniques or information perhaps not covered in the manual, but what I received was not entirely what I expected. I have self taught myself so far and found the user manual to be sufficient enough and feel that this book was just an visual upgrade on the manual.

It is a wonderfully illustrated book, well laid out and thoughtfully written in an idiot-proof way. However the content is definitely more of a glorified version of the user manual. Chapters 5 and 6 provided a few useful tit-bits of information on additional lenses which could be used and macro techniques, but other than that there was nothing in the book I didn't already know. The title says "expanded" guide, I would say only slightly expanded....

If you have only just bought your D70, are totally new to digital and somehow your user manual has mysteriously avoided being placed in the box, I'd suggest buying it, but otherwise, give it a miss.
