Product Description

Product Description

Picture shows three leopards resting amongst vegetation.
Lens-shift Vibration Reduction is highly effective in countering camera shake when exploiting the 7.1x zoom NIKKOR lens.

Once again Nikon has designed a compact camera that exceeds all expectations. Handling like a D-SLR, the powerful COOLPIX P7800 delivers superior quality images with as much creative control as you want. With an outstanding 7.1x zoom NIKKOR lens, this class-leading camera blends design with technology so you can capture bright, high resolution photos and video that won’t fail to impress.

Unleash your imagination with the COOLPIX P7800 and cast a new light on quality.

Optical Brilliance

Packed into a compact body, the high performing COOLPIX P7800 boasts exceptional NIKKOR optics which maintain image brightness throughout the 28-200mm zoom range[1]. With its fast f/2.0-4.0 aperture, images remain sharp even at the widest zoom angle. Including two ED glass elements to minimise chromatic aberration, plus a seven-blade iris diaphragm, super crisp images against stunning natural backgrounds are created. When shooting at the longest focal lengths you’ll be amazed at the effectiveness of the lens-shift Vibration Reduction (VR), meaning you never have to worry about a little camera shake ruining a great shot.

A choice of electronic viewfinder or vari-angle monitor provides exceptional compositional flexibility.
Portrait of a cowgirl resting her head on the back of her horse at sunset.
The 12.2 megapixel 1/1.7” backlit CMOS sensor combined with the EXPEED C2 image processor yields superb colour rendition and tonal range, even in low light.

Sensitive Performance

Performing remarkably well in low-light situations, the large 12.2 megapixel 1/1.7” back-illuminated CMOS sensor combined with the EXPEED C2 image processing system offers both superior noise reduction and high-speed performance. Paired with the versatile 80-6400 ISO setting range, your photos and video will capture the finer details whatever the light conditions. When you want even more control over the light, particularly at night, you can use the Commander Mode of the camera’s built-in pop-up flash to control external Speedlight flash units compatible with the Nikon Creative Lighting System.

New Perspectives

Nikon understands that discovering new perspectives can be the key to the perfect shot. To cope with varying shooting conditions the COOLPIX P7800 has two viewing systems. For D-SLR style shooting, use the bright 921k-dot built-in electronic viewfinder and expertly frame the shot you want with high-definition visibility. For ease of use and to help you achieve the sharpest possible image, the viewfinder incorporates a -3 to +1 dioptre adjustment. Alternatively, shots can be framed using the ultra-bright 7.5cm vari-angle LCD screen which can be swivelled to almost any position to provide new views of the world with fantastic results. When switching to video, the vari-angle monitor really comes into its own allowing users to document a scene from the tightest of angles, or hold the camera at arm’s length and capture a video diary or self-portrait.

Lights, Camera, Action

The COOLPIX P7800 will satisfy any budding director looking for something portable yet versatile. At the touch of a button you can shoot Full HD (1080p) video with built-in stereo sound and take full advantage of the optical zoom to create the perfect scene. Creative control is maintained with options to adjust aperture, shutter speed, ISO sensitivity, filters and effects, so you can shoot movies with the exact visual effect you want. The built-in microphone captures clear high-quality audio, but you can further improve the sound recording using the external microphone input, and integrated HDMI connectivity means your clear, crisp recording can be enjoyed directly on HD televisions[2].

The rounded seven-blade diaphragm creates a soft rendering effect, producing high-quality bokeh.

Control in your Hands

Whether you prefer to take full advantage of the auto-mode function, use the many effects and filters to suit your shooting conditions, or take greater creative control with one of the PSAM modes, you will enjoy producing fantastic photographs and movies with simplistic ease. Front and rear command dials offer easy access to key camera settings and provide smooth manual control. Three user modes allow you to recall your preferred PSAM camera settings instantly, and two customisable function buttons let you bypass the menu and set shortcuts to your favourite camera settings. With RAW format shooting, the camera allows images to be shot and saved in high-quality NRW format even when using in-camera features such as Continuous Shooting and Picture Control. If you like your photographs to take on a different style you can use one of the many special effects or filters such as Cross Process for creative colour rendering.

Stay Connected

To take full advantage of the camera’s potential the COOLPIX P7800 is compatible with a wide range of accessories including the WU-1a wireless adapter to share images in an instant or remotely control the camera with a smartphone. Conventional SD, SDHC and SDXC memory cards are all compatible so you can choose the best memory card for your needs.

Wherever your adventures take you, achieve total control of your photography with the COOLPIX P7800 from Nikon and admire the outstanding results.

Replaces my SLR as I find it too heavy and prefer the P7800 now
Excellent battery life
Compact easy carried
Don't use for action shots but I don't do action shots anyway
Uses for me travel, family scenery, stills and short video clips is as near action as I get

Really to me seems better than Canon or Panasonic offerings with nice EVF and movable screen very useful
Can use SB400 flash on it - not done so yet

For the last few years I have been using a Canon G12 together with my Nikon DSLR kit but wanted to standardize on Nikon so I could use the same dedicated flash units and other items.

One important feature for me is the inclusion of an eye level view finder. This is important for two reasons. Firstly its a bit hard to get a diopter adjustment on a screen which means getting glasses out for every shot and secondly holding a camera against the face makes it much easier to avoid shake than holding it at arms length. The Canon was reasonably good with its optical finder but the electronic finder on this camera is a lot better. There has been critics of the colour rendering and the finder colour is a little washed out but in those few cases where I need to play with the white balance I can get the glasses out and use the bigger rear screen. Overall the eye level finder does everything I need.

Of course having a good viewfinder is not much use unless the end results are up to scratch and so far I have been very impressed and its a good addition to my Nikon kit. My GPS unit works as does my remote shutter release and it shares the wi-fi dongle with my D7100. My two Nikon flash guns work with it and I can use the camera as a remote flash commander.

Love it this camera, fits in my pocket and fulfils all my requirements when not carting heavy DSLR around. Would recommend, solid piece of kit and very easy to understand menus.

I really wanted to like this camera but won't be keeping it. It is really well made, it looks and handles like a modern semi automatic pistol with solid feeling alloys and grippy matt surfaces. It looks substantial but is actually quite lightweight and slim with the lens retracted which allows it to slip into a jacket pocket easily. The controls and features are very good, the dials and buttons are well arranged and nice to use. The appeal for me were the flash capabilities which are unmatched by anything this side of a 10k medium format camera. This camera will sync all the way to 1/4000s with the built in flash and wirelessly command one group of nikon speedlights too while it does it, which means you can get one shot perfect off camera ttl flash exposures even in bright light. Other highlights are built in ND filter and decent video recording with the all essential mic input. It is also great as a selfie cam with its flip out screen and IR receiver which can trigger the shutter using a £5 IR remote.

The image quality is a bit sub par by todays premium compact standards due to the smallish sensor but this is somewhat offset by the very sharp lens and at ISO 400 and below the results are excellent in decent light. The EVF is useful for framing and discete snapping although it doesn't represent the colours being captured. I found the viewing size to be just fine. What is really inexcusable is the buggy and plain retarded processing which means that even simple tasks such as reviewing and deleting bog standard jpegs is a real chore. Ask it to go anywhere near a RAW file and it rolls over and falls asleep. There are noticeable and annoying delays almost every other time a button is pressed (although the shutter delay is ok).

The last Coolpix I owned was the P7000 a camera that produced excellent image quality but was dogged by issues in terms of operation and speed. This camera is no speed demon but it has just about everything you could want in a compact. The key feature is the bright, 28-200 equiv. lens, producing superb image quality. Nikon have always had the edge on colour resolution for me, but that is down to personal taste. The articulating screen is a nice feature to have but not a decision maker for me, however the EVF is a huge step forward in compact cameras. I am not a fan of holding the camera out in front of me and like the added stability gained by holding the camera to the eye. I am not saying the view through the viewfinder is great but it does give you all the shooting information and gives a 100% view. The quick menu button is not well placed for easy access and some functions require a two or three step process, however this is something that experience and time will hopefully improve. I have only had mine for a couple of weeks but am hopeful it will be the last camera I ever buy.

This Nikon Coolpix P7800 is an enthusiast compact with a great control layout and 7.1x lens, but it's not the right camera for everyone.

Pros:
Sharp lens. Vari-angle LCD. 7.1x zoom range. Hot shoe and EVF. Lots of physical controls. Microphone input. Raw shooting support. Slow-motion video.

Cons:
Images on the noisy side. Lacks touch screen and Wi-Fi. Limited burst shooting. Slower to focus in low light and in macro mode. Bulky.

Due to the image noise would recommend comparing to this Nikon on spec's and price: http://amzn.to/18jfNm8
