Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

The Nikon COOLPIX P510 - Covering all the angles beautifully.

The COOLPIX P510, successor to the hugely popular COOLPIX P500, offers an astounding 42x optical NIKKOR zoom lens that ranges from a powerful 1000mm super-telephoto focal length, down to a 24mm wide-angle. It also packs a punch with its 16-megapixel back-illuminated CMOS sensor and advanced lens-shift vibration reduction. The P510 is able to capture detail that would be too far away to reach with any other camera. Steady shots are ensured in any situation, thanks to advanced lens-shift vibration reduction.

The 42x optical NIKKOR zoom lens reaches a powerful 1000mm super-telephoto focal length

Zooming beyond expectations: the high performance COOLPIX P510

An excellent performer with unparalleled range, the compact COOLPIX P510 boasts a 42x zoom, a tiltable high resolution 921K-dot LCD monitor and Full HD (1080p) movie recording with stereo sound.

For everything from wide-angle shots of a group of friends to long-reaching frames of dolphins out at sea, the astonishingly powerful wide-angle to super-telephoto range of the COOLPIX P510 covers all circumstances. Its 16-megapixel backlit CMOS sensor and advanced lens-shift vibration reduction ensure sharp shooting in any light, so that even at longer focal lengths, frames remain steady and subjects are pin-sharp.

One-touch access to movie mode means you can switch easily from taking stills to filming in Full HD (1080p) with stereo sound. Optical zoom and autofocus functions are still available when filming, and the COOLPIX P510 can record in slow or fast motion using speeds of up to 120 fps (VGA). Movies can be shot in iFrame format and a built-in HDMI connector lets you connect the camera directly to an HDTV, to view photos and films straight away with family and friends.

The tiltable high resolution LCD monitor will help you discover your creative side, making it easy to take shots from above or below to get a different perspective. Built-in GPS records the exact location where a picture was taken as a geotag in the image data.

Advanced Lens-shift VRII realises the equivalent of a shutter speed setting that's four stops faster than the actual physical setting.

42x optical zoom and Nikon VRII image stabilisation

A 16.1 megapixel Back-illuminated CMOS image sensor is paired with a 42x zoom NIKKOR ED glass lens that covers the phenomenal focal range of 24 mm wide-angle to 1000 mm super-telephoto (35 mm format equivalent). Advanced Lens-shift VRII realises the equivalent of a shutter speed setting that's four stops faster than the actual physical setting. This is a big aid to achieving consistently sharp results, particularly when taking advantage of the super-zoom, shooting macros or recording 1080p Full HD movies.

The continuous shooting and compositing capabilities of the Back-illuminated CMOS image sensor helps you take beautiful Night landscape or Night portrait pictures while shooting with the camera in hand.

Optimised controls and designed for efficient handling

The 7.5 cm (3-in.) vari-angle 921k-dot (approx.) high-resolution Clear colour display can be tilted as much as 90 degrees (approx.) upward or 80 degrees (approx.) downward. You can assign often-used functions to the new Function button for quick one-touch access. The handgrip is designed to help minimise camera shake. And the body includes a side-mounted zoom control for stable handling.

High-speed continuous shooting helps capture all the action

The COOLPIX P510 keeps you ahead of the action with high-speed shooting options. With a press of the dedicated continuous shooting mode button, you can quickly switch from single-frame to High-speed continuous shooting at a rapid 6fps (approx.) for full-resolution (4608 x 3456) images*. Other modes include Sports continuous mode (approx. 60fps/120fps) and the Pre-shooting cache.

Beautiful handheld still images and movies at night

Well worth the wait! 6 April 2012

I'm so pleased I hung on for the release of this camera having nearly bought a different one a couple of months ago. It is my first Nikon, having had Fujifilm cameras before which I did really like but the lure of having an obscene 42 x optical zoom was just too tempting! Even at full zoom you get nice clear shots and the whole camera just seems to be much more user friendly than my trusty old Fujis. It probably hasn't quite got such a solid feel to it as I was expecting and is very light, but seems well built and looks great. The separate button for video shooting is a real advantage, just hit it and you are shooting straight away. It takes great HD footage although can struggle to autofocus sometimes in video mode once you get towards full zoom. Anyway, it's all about that 42x zoom really isn't it! I read some 'expert' opinions before the camera was released saying that it would struggle to give good results on full zoom. It doesn't, it's great! Go buy one!

Hi, I've had this camera a couple of days now and am really starting to love it. In brief, this little beauty takes very good pictures at all zoom positions. The autofocus is not as snappy as say the Canon 1000D et al but it's honestly very good - certainly not what I'd rate as a weakness by any measure. The image stabilization is in my opinion outstanding - yes you really can take crisp pictures at 1000mm (and up to 2000mm with digital-zoom) with this camera. This camera has a multitude of features, some of which effect your pictures at the instant of taking the picture, some are post-processing functions ala PSE. I've tried a few of them and they seem to work well, as advertised it must be said.

Now for the dropped star in my rating.....

If you are considering this camera with the intention of using the video capabilities for anything other than shooting either stationary or very slowly-moving subjects not further than about half the zoom-range away - think again. When using in video mode the autofocus seems to suffer a nervous breakdown; to reiterate what others have already said, the video AF simply dozes in and out of focus and can take an age to achieve focus at all - it is in all honesty quite useless. I tried it with the camera mounted on a monopod and got diabolical results, goodness knows what it's like hand-held! Finally, when zooming (and indeed focusing) during video you are able to hear every whir, buzz and what sounds like tiny men inside the camera working pulleys - rendering any sound recorded unusable.

This AF problem is ONLY WITH VIDEO, in my somewhat limited experience; when using (as I intended when purchasing this camera)for still photography this camera is fantastic and you will very quickly grow to love it!

In summary - for stills - easily 5 stars - excellent performance, for video - definately 2 stars at most - it will make you weep if you want this camera to shoot video......

Great for wildlife 7 April 2012
Colour Name:Gunmetal|Amazon Verified Purchase
Lugging around a DSLR with a long telephoto lens can be very tiring but I like to have a camera with me every time I go out. I bought one of these P510s a few weeks ago when they were first introduced. I didn't really know what to expect. It sounds great on paper but was the blurb too good to be true? I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised. My first few shots of greenfinches at my back garden bird feeder were superb - and they were hand held. I couldn't hand-hold my DSLR with a 500mm lens like that. It needs a monopod or tripod. The P510 is very easy to use and has most of the features of my Nikon DSLRs. The only slight drawback is that the speed of focusing is slower than my DSLR and telephoto. Fine if the subject is sitting still but not so good if it is moving. It won't replace my DSLR completely but as a 'second camera' to have with me all the time, it is excellent.
