Nikon P300 7 May 2011
I ordered my Nikon P300 on Tuesday evening using the free postage option, it was with me by Friday, great service by Amazon.
I'd previously owned a Canon S90 which is a superb compact, but only has a 28mm wide angle lens & VGA video. I settled on the Nikon P300 as it has a really fast 1.8 lens at wide angle, an extra wide 24mm lens (these are 35mm equivalent focal lengths), and full 1080P video so great for travels. It doesn't have RAW but then if I want to go to that level I'll use my SLR Camera.
My only initial reservation in buying this camera was it has a smaller sensor than the S90 so I was slightly concerned at a possible image quality loss & more noise. I needn't have worried. The picture quality from this compact is amazing and low light capabilities superb. I took some pictures last night to try it out when it was semi dark and the camera produced great results, it can see much more light & detail than my eyes can (& no I don't wear glasses yet!!).
There are loads of other features I'm looking forward to trying out, but the 1.8 lens has got to be the real selling point. Another good feature is that if you have a modern TV with CEC control, you can use the TVs remote control to control your photo & video playback from the camera when hooked up via HDMI lead. Clever!!

In summary, if you want a superb compact with a fast wide angle lens & full manual controls, forget the Canon S90 or S95, get this & it's cheaper too!.... I'm off to take photos!!!

I've had my Nikon P300 for a couple of weeks now and I'm really impressed with it. I wanted a camera to take out with me when I didn't want to lug about my Panasonic Lumix G1 and it does the job nicely.

I obsessed over which camera to buy for several weeks and narrowed it down to the Canon S95 and the Nikon P300. My priorities were (1) Image Quality (2) Fast lens for low light shooting (3) HD Video.

The Nikon P300 excels in all these three categories - I am really impressed by the quality of the images and in comparison tests it held its own with my Lumix G1 in most situations and in some cases performed better. I take a lot of shots of my kids and pets indoors and other cameras don't perform that well especially at night but this camera is fantastic and I have yet to need to use the flash. The HD video is also really good quality. This is all nicely displayed on a big and bright 3 inch screen. The camera is very easy to use and use in point and shoot mode generally provides superb images with the added bonus of manual settings for more advanced use. I sent some pics of my new baby to my dad who's really into his photography and when I said it was on a new Nikon he presumed it was a DSLR which says something about the image quality of the P300!

I looked at the S95 as this was reputed to have better image quality. The advantage of the S95 is that it has RAW which I wasn't too fussed about and a bigger sensor which in theory should produce superior images. However, I tested both and I couldn't really tell the difference in image quality. Not enough to justify an extra £100 anyway! Also, the video isn't great on the S95 with no auto focus or zoom and I understand the battery life is really poor on the Canon.

The Nikon isn't without its flaws - there is no quick menu system for easy access to key functions, there is no manual focus or spot metering function for more advanced users, there is no dedicated display button to toggle views and info on the display and there is no battery charger so you have to charge in camera or buy a separate charger.

However, no camera is perfect and these are a small price to pay for what is a great value, easy to use camera that takes excellent photos. I'd recommend this to anyone.

A Little Cracker! 23 Jun 2011
I bought a P300 (instead of an S95) for 3 reasons; 1. It feels better in my hand than the S95 and you can use it one-handed without feeling like you are going to drop it. 2. I don't shoot or process raw being from the old school of 'get it right when you take it'. 3. It is ever-so marginally larger than the S95 but, for me, the 24mm and longer zoom makes it more useable. I can take the P300 anywhere and as they say - the best camera is the one you have with you. So far, the results are great, although I am still working out how to make the best of the post-shot options including Nikons D-lighting in camera touch up which is very good. Finally, the low light results are outstanding due to the fast lens and image stabilisation. I can't remember being able to shoot so well at night and indoors even with my old 35mm and a fast prime lens.
