I bought this camera to replace my old Canon A430 because it suddenly stopped working after serving me faithfully for five years.
L24 Pros: it's compact (pocket size), fairly light, reasonably thin and looks quite stylish; it has a small amount of internal memory.
L24 Cons (many): the full user manual is only available on a CD (supplied); fiddly menu; self-timer fixed at 10 seconds and cannot be changed by user; self-timer has to be switched on every time for each separate photo (very annoying); picture quality at highest resolution (4320x3240*) shows an awful lot of graininess even in bright lighting conditions, plus quite poor contrast (blotchy); there is no way to turn off the poor quality digital zoom function so one needs to be careful not to zoom in too much on a frame in certain shooting modes; the general picture quality is less than satisfactory, with the balance focused mainly in the centre of the image rather than sampled from various points; the "macro facility" isn't up to much; the USB plug (AVI OUT) socket is located on the bottom of the camera, which means laying it either on its front or back and thus risking scratching the unit; the tripod socket is offset from central, so using a portable mini tripod makes it inclined to topple over; Movie mode seems to have no options; some settings are not retained when switching off the camera (i.e. flash setting) and have to be set again the next time the camera is used; the supplied software is "bloatware" and installs other software automatically and caused my computer to slow down noticeably (plus it took me over half an hour to remove it all and it corrupted my AntiVirus software - what was Nikon thinking using this garbage!)
Overall, compared to my old Canon A430, I think this Nikon is a major disappointment.
Perhaps Nikon should spend more money on developing their products and less on glossy TV advertising campaigns. This is my first Nikon product and I will think very carefully before I buy another one, if ever.
