Product Description

Rugged reliability in a compact body available in three colours

Built for active lifestyles in or out of the water, the COOLPIX AW110 from Nikon is ready to follow you on your extreme adventures. Waterproof, shockproof, dustproof and freeze-proof, this robust compact is perfect for capturing every splash, dive, jump and bump on video or in mind-blowing photos.

Even underwater at depths of up to 18 metres the highly sensitive 16-megapixel back illuminated CMOS sensor and a dedicated Underwater mode combine to deliver stunning results. With built-in Wi-Fi for instant sharing and built-in GPS to log your location, the COOLPIX AW110 will keep your adrenaline rush alive.

Available in black, orange, or camouflage, this ergonomically designed all-weather camera is the perfect companion for anyone who loves the thrill of the great outdoors.

Picture shows a portrait shot of a young woman parasailing (taken at 48 metres above sea-level).
Ready for adventure, the COOLPIX AW110 can record location, altitude, depth and heading.

Record the Highs and Lows

The tough COOLPIX AW110 is ready for action. Waterproof at depths of up to 18 metres, shockproof from heights of up to 2 metres, and freeze-proof for temperatures down to -10°C, this camera will travel almost anywhere. Whether you are above sea level or exploring below the surface this feature-rich camera can record the altitude at which you take a shot using the built-in altimeter (range: -300m to 4500m) or record your underwater depth with the Hydro-barometer. And with a dedicated Action Control button you can operate the camera single-handedly, even when wearing gloves.

Fully Connected

Ideal for social media enthusiasts who want to stay connected, the COOLPIX AW110 offers both convenience and flexibility. With built-in Wi-Fi it’s easy to transfer your snapshots to a compatible smartphone or tablet[1] so you can email, text or upload them to your favourite social networking or photo album sites. With the downloadable App you can also use your smart device as a remote-control for the camera which is great for self-portraits or if the camera is placed on a tripod.

Picture shows the front and reverse of the camera body underwater.
Waterproof, shockproof and freeze-proof, the COOLPIX AW110 takes the tougher approach.

Putting Your Photos on the Map

In addition to the Wi-Fi sharing capabilities, the built-in GPS, Electronic Compass and World Map display are great for photographers on the move. The GPS records the exact location of each shot as a geotag, the Electronic Compass shows which direction the camera is facing, and the World Map display shows where you took the photo and the routes saved in your GPS log. You can also follow the path of your adventure and share your journeys on Google Earth, Google+ or with the included Nikon View NX2 software. Whether you want to retrace your steps or review points of interest in playback, you’ll enjoy reliving your travels in a whole new way.

Outstanding Performance

The COOLPIX AW110 may boast a slender body measuring just 24.5mm but there’s nothing delicate about this rugged camera or its strong performance. The NIKKOR 28-140mm wide-angle 5x optical zoom lens[2] offers outstanding precision and pin-sharp resolution while the imaging power of the back-illuminated 16-MP CMOS sensor and the EXPEED C2 processor work together to deliver clear shots even in low light conditions. And with so much activity to focus on, the COOLPIX AW110 offers four different ways of countering blurred images. Lens-shift and Motion Blur Reduction reduce the effects of camera shake, a maximum ISO of 3200 reduces the risk of blur with fast-moving subjects or in low light, and Best Shot Selector (BSS) automatically selects the sharpest of up to 10 sequential shots. Combined, this superior image quality is displayed with exceptional brightness and impressive colour rendering on the large 7.5cm (3.0in) OLED screen, making it easy to frame your shots.

Picture of a fish taken underwater (at a depth of 18 metres) using the Underwater Mode.
At a depth of 18 metres you can still capture fantastic images thanks to the Underwater Mode.

Explore the Possibilities

Whether you prefer to take full advantage of the auto-mode function or use the many effects and filters to suit your shooting conditions, you will enjoy producing fantastic photographs and movies with the COOLPIX AW110. As your adventure may take you into areas where lighting is an issue, the camera’s dedicated light modes, like Backlight scene mode used in combination with Auto HDR, or Night Portrait mode, deliver superb results in any light, even without a tripod. Underwater mode automatically adjusts the camera’s white balance setting to capture underwater scenes just as you see them. And Scene Modes such as Easy Panorama 360°/180° or Sunset automatically work to bring out the shot’s full potential.

Moving Pictures

You’ll receive exceptional quality video and stereo sound with the COOLPIX AW110’s Full HD (1080p) movie recording capability. Switching instantly from photos to video with the dedicated movie-record button you can use the optical zoom with autofocus and film in slow or fast motion at up to 120fps. And with HDMI connectivity, your clear, crisp recording can be enjoyed directly on HD televisions[3].

Capturing the fun and exhilaration both above and below the water, the COOLPIX AW110 from Nikon is a tough all-rounder, ready to perform at the highest level.

[1] Compatible with iOS and Android smart devices. This feature requires use of an App that can be downloaded for free from Google Play and the Apple App Store.
[2] Actual focal length 5.0-25.0mm (angle of view equivalent to that of a 28-140mm lens in 35mm [135] format).
[3] An HDMI cable (not supplied) with a Type D connector is required.

2.0 out of 5 stars Excellent camera but not 100% waterproof! 22 May 2013
Colour Name:Orange|Verified Purchase
Takes great pictures and videos, easy to use, simple menus (typical Nikon). The battery cover mechanism is really well designed and sturdy (compared to other waterproof cameras). Large, high resolution and bright screen. Couldn't ask for more... except....

It's sold as a rugged, waterproof camera but on the second day of use I found water drops behind the lens (i.e. inside the camera body, so not cleanable). These appeared on (and ruined) a number of otherwise excellent shots. Further, there was so much condensation on the inside of the back screen that I couldn't even see what I was pointing at - it made taking pictures impossible. Not sure if this was just one badly made unit, or if the whole range is faulty - interested to hear if anyone else has had this issue.

(I have returned the product)

5.0 out of 5 stars Sturdy with so many gadgets! 15 Mar 2013
By Andrew

It is a great camera, feels very sturdy and is easy to hold as it is fairly light i felt. It takes great video quality. I bought this after my Nikon D90 as an additional one and i have yet to try the underwater deeper than my sink but it works :) great little camera to have in all weather and takes good quality photos. Iphone app works as well as a remote.
controls are a little bit small for changing zoom but the other controls are good including the movement sensor controls in one of the selection menus.

I am a dedicated DSLR fan and hate fiddly little instamatics so bear this in mind. I have spent about 4 hours doing various test shots and testing the Nikon App that allows you to control the camera with your Ipad/Iphone. Most of my criticisms are generic to instamatic cameras - poor battery life, fiddly menu controls etc but ignoring these and focusing on the product itself my main criticisms are:

1) I found the camera autofocus a bit hit and miss, particularly in poor light. On many occasions, after the half click on the shutter button, the camera was telling me that the shot was in focus when clearly it was not. This is very disappointing. If this problem persists, I will send the camera back.

2) Auto white balance also produces some weird results, again particularly in low light.

3) There is no lens cap. Scratches to the lens surface are inevitable particularly as this is marketed as a outdoor sand water and grit device. My advice is buy a cheap camera pouch and keep your camera in there when it is not being used. Carrying it around all day exposed to day to day knocks is a recipe for a short lens life.

It is useful, especially on holiday, to be able to wirelessly transfer your photos to your tablet/iPhone and (after downloading Nikons wireless Mobile Utility App). Some people have had problems with this but it worked fine for me - it is a bit clunky as each time you want to do this you have to turn on the camera's wireless function and then switch your device's network to the camera's network - there does not seem to be a continuous sync function - I guess this would run the battery down too quickly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wifi is awesome 25 April 2013
By Lee
Colour Name:Orange
Don't listen to the one star review above. As with all electronic kit when making a decent investment you should do your research. There's an app in the apple App Store for Nikon. Down load it, link you phone to the Nikon wifi and then open the app. You can then transfer the photos from the camera to your phone or iPad and you can also remotely control the camera to take photos (the same way as the panasonic lumix ft5 has been heavily promoting) by actually seeing what the camera sees on your phones screen.

The camera is waterproof, you've just got to give it a really good rinse under cold water and make sure it is completely dry before you open it to take the memory card out or charge the battery.

The inside of the lense fogged up on me once, and I realised I'd tried to blow some dust out of the battery compartment in an air condition room, so a little later the humidity of my breath had condensed on the inside of the lense. All you have to do is open the battery door in a safe dust/moisture free place and leave for a short while to dry out.

I really wanted the panasonic, but its more expensive, only has a 4.6x zoom compared to 5x zoom and only goes 12m underwater whereas the Nikon does 18m which to me says less chance of leaking in any situation.

The photos ate awesome and the video particularly messing around in a pool is so much fun and high quality.

My only issue is the white print on a couple of the buttons play (▶),OK & MENU has started to wear off after the first week? But a great first week on holiday with 700 photos and 50 videos taken its been heavily used, plus I know what the buttons do now anyway.

2.0 out of 5 stars Expectations cruely dashed 9 Sep 2013
By S. Warn
Colour Name:Black|Verified Purchase
I bought this to upgrade from my existing Sony waterproof camera that I simply love and has served me well for many years. The appeal of this one for me is that it has higher MP than my current, can go deeper and crucially I LOVE the wifi option. Oh how my anticipation grew as I ordered this just 2 days before I popped off on my summer holiday. It arrived in time (thanks Amazon)and I duly popped it in my bag to the airport.

Having used Sony cameras for many years I did have to look up some of the functions in the online user guide as I was not familiar with the Nikon menu structure. Its also not touch screen which I am also used to and I found the little buttons on this model a bit fiddly.

Sadly, almost immediately I started using it I was faced with the much talked about condensation issue. And, yes, it does mention it might happen in certain circumstances but after using it for 2 weeks I wanted to let it plummet to the bottom of the ocean, never to return.

If I had it in my hand for half an hour and used it = condensation.
If I took it out of my handbag which had been by my chair for hours = condensation.
If it got splashed by the kids on a pedelo = condensation.
If I stepped outside = condensation
Sometimes I wasn't anywhere near water = condensation.

I think you get the jist? Was I in a tropical rainforest, no, just Zante, temp was low to mid 30's. It started with condensation on the lens but progressed to condensation on the viewing screen. Yes, it does clear pretty quickly but that's little comfort when you have a foggy patch over the face of your 7 year old coming down a waterslide. I had my little Sony for years and has tackled hotter and wetter places than this and I never had condensation once.
