I've had this camera for about 3 weeks and have to say it's absolutely fabulous. The main feature that attracted me to it is the 8.3x optical zoom lens. This gives a zoom equivalent to a 300mm lens in a 35mm camera. I used to use a Nikon F65 with a separate 300mm zoom lens. Now, thanks to the 4800 I can still take some great long distance shots but with a camera small and light enough to fit in my pocket. The camera also has great features like scene assist and movie mode, and comes with Nikon photo software. The instruction book is very thorough, but the camera is easy enough to operate so you'll be taking great photos before you've read it.

I got the camera for use in outdoor sports. The zoom is good on the camera, and the sports assist mode/ continuous shooting is very helpful. The camera is bigger than my previous nikon, a 2100, but to be honest I prefer that as I can turn it on and take with the big button and handgrip can take one handed pictures when skiing, climbing and paragliding.
I only have a couple of criticisms. The plastic covering the lens is quite brittle looking in comparison to what is quite a robust package. On a couple of occasions these plastic shields have not opened correctly and shots have been ruined. Other than that the on/off button is not very positive and is quite small - )I end up using my teeth if I am wearing gloves!). The battery life is good but I would prefer to have the option to use AAs rather than rely on an expensive rechargeable or two for my camping weekends.
