Having had a V1 for a while now, I was intrigued by the V2, so purchased one to compliment the V1. From a handling point of view, it looks like Nikon addressed most of the V1 short comings - i.e. lack of grip, no mode dial (and most frustrating of all), the ability to shut off the image review in single shot mode.

The increase in resolution to 14mp is a nice to have, but isn't really streets ahead of the 10mp V1. Nice to also see that all my accessories purchased for the V1 still fit the V2 (Speedlight and GPS unit). Still very light and compact and an ideal walk about camera. Shame that Nikon decided to use a different battery from the V1 (so not the EN-EL15 that's shared across the V1, D7000, D71000, D600 and D800), but in any case it still seems to last a good while.

Overall I'd say the Nikon 1 line has evolved into a nice travel alternative to a heavy DSLR or even a M4/3 system, though obviously the DSLR still has it for ultimate quality, resolution and depth of field control.

Positives.
Still very small and compact and super sharp Nikon 1 series lenses (especially the 18.,5mm F1.8)
Nice big grip
Proper Mode Dial
Ability to turn off the image review
Still has super fast AF and massive buffer with DSLR beating frame rates.
Nice increase in resolution
Good implementation of the Function button for changing various items quickly.
Built in pop up Speedlight good for fill and general night snapshots (though not very powerful - i.e like a compact camera).

Negatives.
Another new battery (why Nikon ?)
Not a massive step up in detail or ISO quality over the V1
No Auto ISO to 400 (now the minimum is Auto ISO to 800).

This is really just my first thoughts on the V2. I have just purchased this to replace my V1 and managed to purchase the 'body only' version whilst visiting the USA because I already own the lenses from having a V1. This is a great step up from the V1. Because of the shape change it sits really comfortable in the hand and is noticeably smaller much for me is a positive. Now has more manual controls to hand without having to dive into the menu as with the V1 and the built in flash is a welcome addition. My first results with it are very pleasing with no issues at all on picture quality. Build quality is first rate. If you are looking for a very good alternative to a DSLR for travel etc then you could do a lot worse than choose the V2. Overall a great piece of kit, particularly now that Nikon have a reasonable range of good lenses to compliment this.

Following much searching and consideration I went for the new Nikon 1 V2 as a back-up system to my DSLR kit - Nikon D300s with pro lenses. I will be using this for family travel, and sports photography due to the very fast autofocus and excellent image quality. In fact there is a real possibility this will become my No.1 go-to camera....

I have compared the image quality - specifically the image noise - to my Panasonic TZ7. I am pleased to say that although the Panasonic has very good image quality, this Nikon V2 far exceeds it! The images are sharp, very well exposed, good white balance from Auto setting, and up to about 800iso very pleasing noise control - which suits me well for sports and action shots.

It also compares reasonably well against my D300s and 17-55/f2.8 - it could never replace this camera/lens but it was actually better than I expected.

There are also some great new ways to shoot including the motion snapshot - but in reality not sure who often this will get used or remembered that it's there!

Overall a very impressive little package - superb quality, light weight, small enough for a jacket pocket, and a system that can expand to suit your requirements. A DSLR user will be very at home (especially Nikon user) with this camera and the images it produces.

Why not 5 stars - as previously reviewed these are shipped by Amazon with the wrong adaptor - and Nikon are blaming Amazon as they are supposed to put in the correct adaptor for wherever it is shipped to. There is a simple remedy to use a normal household 'US/Euro to UK' plug adaptor, but not ideal as the camera is very expensive and should be supplied correctly.

If you are looking for a good balance between excellent image quailty, compact size, and control over shooting settings then this represents a very serious contender for your hard earned money. I'm glad I bought it and would thoroughly recommend it!

Wonderful to return to a proper camera with interchangeable lens and a viewfinder that works clearly when the sun is shining. The tech spec has everything I ever use and more - love the 15/sec burst. Focusing is smooth and fast and the retractable lenses keep the unit compact when not in use. OK, so it has a physically small sensor but the whole camera is built around that resulting in a very comfortable unit - you just have to get used to using the lens at around 20mm to act like your old 50mm on full frame. The Lens Factor equivalent is x2.7 so it is great to have a 300mm equivalent on a camera with anti shake compensation.

The Nikon1 V2 is a well designed compact camera with interchangeable lenses.
The kit 10-30mm takes high quality photos in normal conditions and the 30-110 telephoto is good for portraits.
It has a clear Electronic Viewfinder and this model is a handy, if expensive, portable companion to a DSLR.
The images tend to become noisy in low light at over ISO800
