So you are considering an S30? What attracted me was the possibility of having a waterproof and shockproof camera with reasonable video at a very attractive price point. It is never going to match up to a dSLR and with a 1/3" sensor is not going to be the most fantastic image quality either. So bearing in mind the compromises, what do you get for under £100.

The good points:
It is waterproof and shockproof.
It is ambidextrous - there are two strap mounting points.
The buttons are big and easy to press with gloves on.
Good resolution
runs on AA batteries which are easy to replace.
Battery cover is a bit tricky for small fingers (a good thing).

The bad points:
Everything you expect in a compact camera at the bottom end of the market with a small sensor - ie relatively slow to start up (many seconds), slow image processing, flash charging etc. But that comes with the territory.
Menus are good but not comprehensive. A keen amateur who likes total control will be a little frustrated, but read on.

In action: A camera I can throw in my jersy pocket and not worry about sweat or the weather when I am on my bike. It is quite aggressive on image sharpening and the image stabilisation works well (down to 1/10 second or more). It has auto iso only, no option to change. Flash settings are auto, or off. You cannot force fill flash on.

Picture controls are fine. There is an easy to access image adjustment with live changes for exposure, colour balance and saturation with simple sliders.

Shooting modes are also reasonable. There is a close up mode (basically disables the flash as far as I can tell), and some other fun things like multiple photos with the interval selectable between 30s,1min and 5min.

Remember the good old days when all one did was look through the viewfinder and press a button? Welcome to the 21st century equivalent, but with a few easily understood bells on. In some ways it's a pity this excellent camera is labled as a childrens or family camera as it's far more than just that. Who in truth needs all those pixels found on so many other cameras? (like how many blades does one actually need to shave with and where will it end, ten? more?!) Who needs a myriad of buttons to press, a never ending menu, endless options and a price tag to match? Very few of us. Then there's the waterproof aspect, if Carlsberg made cameras.......... it is so satisfying not having to worry about something as simple as rain or as in my case when sailing, spray, swimming or even snorkeling I can take photos, yay!! Another very satisfying feature is the camera takes conventional batteries, how many times has a more sophisticated camera run flat on you? Carry a few in your bag or buy over almost any counter these days and you're cooking on gas again! And above all else I now own a Nikon!

Well done Nikon! At last a proper digital camera that is childproof - at least it looks like it will do the job. I work in a nursery and have lost count of the money we have wasted on cameras that have succumbed to child curiosity - the slightest drop is usually enough to finish most off; lenses no longer work etc. There are cameras for kids like those produced by Fisher Price but the image quality and screen size are diabolical considering the price; even the children think they are rubbish - they are used to seeing their parents cameras. This is a real camera, ruggedly built with a screen you can see and decent picture quality. No fiddly moving bits to get damaged, logical well laid out buttons and a lens that fingers can't get to - brilliant!. The only question is why has it taken so long to get there? If it lives up to it's promise it is the answer to a prayer.

I only have one gripe with this camera. It works with AA batteries, which is great BUT if you like to use rechargeables it doesn't work with your average off-the-shelf brands. For some reason the camera just switches itself off when the shutter button is pressed or sometimes at random. The only solution it seems is to buy Nikon's EN-MH2 batteries that cost anything between £30-40.
UPDATE: Castle Cameras, Bournemouth, found an alternative that seems to be working OK. It's the Sanyo 'Eneloop' Ready to Use Rechargeable Battery with USB Recharger. Price £12.90
RESULT: My daughter is now having GREAT fun with her camera. It's a doddle to use. Looking forward to seeing some prints and using it underwater.

I am a father of a 4 yr old daughter. I also make money from taking pictures. I have had underwater dedicated camera systems for diving, robust, lightweight slrs for climbing and long distance hiking and currently use Nikon's DSLR D700 for child photography. My daughter has shown both an interest and importantly, an aptitude for taking pictures. Rather than trying to teach her to use the more complex, less child friendly and more prone to damage, compact camera we have (Canon S95 with underwater housing), I have been looking for a compact that combines, robustness, child friendly controls/buttons, easy menus for the child to learn progressively with, live window at the rear, and of course one which looks cool!! This camera has all these attributes at a reasonable price. At this price range, and because all the delicate bits hide behind a protective waterproof housing, it is great for the beach, snorkeling, in the swimming pool or just round the garden, without the fear of irreparable damage. In the process of trying instill a sense of responsibility for looking after her things, I can feel confident that she can learn, play and look after the camera herself, without the constant spectre of Mum or Dad looking on anxiously, when she is using it. I won't go into the technical product review, the reader can research this. There are several cameras that are aimed at the child market. I have read many reviews and have come to the conclusion that the vast majority are really only toys that produce poor results, not very well built and quickly disappoint the user and parent. My feeling is, given what an image driven world we live in, starting out with a fun but well balanced learning tool, will yield better results in the longer term. But, all I can do impart my 'real world' experience. This is a great product at a comfortable price that can grow with your child for a few years before technological developments drive the need to replace it.
