This is not a professional camera but it could be, i have read some reviews from professional and overall this is the camera to choose. Has also a design that allow us to take pictures in almost all positions and angles, its well built, has a very good flash, the lens is perfect, and you can add lens, everything works more than an amateur or advanced photographer needs to register those special moments and pictures that we all like to be perfectly registered in the picture.
It is in my opinion and in many other people opinion the best overall digital camera you can get, and its cheaper than its many other competitors including the Canon G2, the Nikon Coolpix 5000 and the Sony DSC 707. AMAZING CAMERA, AMAZING RESULTS ... FABULOUS PICTURES.
I've had this machine for about 2 months now and have used it under a variety of circumstances - night, indoor, bright sunshine, macro. Overall, I am very pleased with it. Good points are:
1. Excellent control over image capture, with aperture, shutter speed, sharpening and exposure compensation fully manual if desired
2. A good point n' shoot auto mode when time's short
3. Fabulous macro abilities - this is where it excels
4. Split-body swivel feature is very useful for interesting composures
5. Image quality: if you leave sharpening for post-processing, the images are generally well-leveled, and show very little purple fringing. White balance is good, with 5 presets (eg cloud, indoor etc.)
6. Scene modes take a lot of the setting calibration work out of it, but you soon want to move on to the more flexible manual modes.
Not so good points:
1. Lack of auto-focus assist lamp means AF is patchy in poor light
2. Add manual focus is hard to get right - the image in the screen is not big enough to see that you've focused properly until after you take it (then you can zoom in)
3. 16 MB card is way too small - consider 128 MB at least
4. No case.
Overall, this camera's a good piece of kit. Rememember, you get what you pay for in this field - it won't give you the artistic flexibility that a digital SLR will but as point-and-shoot digicams go this one's got to be on your list if you savour quality.
The camera is one of the best constructed I have come across, with a full magnesium metal casing, not flimsy plastic. The most striking feature is the split body, which is not a gimmick but a truly useful thing to have. Own one and you will not wish to relinquish the huge advantages it gives you in composing low or high level shots. Candid work becomes easy too.
The high quality Nikkor lens also gives you decent optics. Unusually, the lens is fully internal so nothing extends beyond the face when you use the zoom. Together with the threaded lens hood it opens up a huge range of possibilities with attachments, from filters to fisheyes. It also makes this the digital camera of choice for use with telescopes, microscopes, or other optical equipment. Where the 4500 truly delights is its amazing capabilities in the macro field. You can literally fill the frame with a house fly! No other camera in this price bracket comes anywhere near. You will use it more than you think, particularly if you wish to explore nature photography, auction items on the internet or keep a visual record of watches and jewellery for your insurance.
The camera has numerous shooting modes and plenty of flexibility in the way you can use it, from fully auto to manual. Navigation is intuitive and painless. Whatever sub menu you are in though a light touch on the shutter returns you instantly to shooting mode - no awkward fiddling needed. Full technical specifications and a downloadable brochure are available at the official Nikon website. To get full and fuss free use from this camera I would advise you to not just read but to learn the comprehensive manual! It's no more difficult than others but if you are a technophobe who cannot work a computer, digital photography is probably not for you.
So in summary, the camera has capabilities that cannot be matched by anything else on offer and it couples these with high quality from a respected brand. I was delighted with my purchase, and I'm sure you will be with yours! Highly Recommended.
