Product Description

Dazzling D-SLR performance and image quality from the compact COOLPIX A.

Combining portability with D-SLR performance, the Nikon COOLPIX A is the feature-rich camera you can take professional shots with, anytime, anywhere. Ideal for any photography enthusiast, the COOLPIX A is the world’s smallest camera to feature a DX format sensor, and handles demanding shooting situations with ease. This sleek, compact camera offers craftsmanship, operability and system integrity that are all authentically Nikon. Working with exceptional image quality and full creative control, you can realise more of your photographic vision.

Prime Performance

In pursuit of high-definition quality across the entire image, the COOLPIX A combines a 23.6 x 15.6mm DX-format CMOS sensor providing 16.2 megapixels, with the same high-performance EXPEED 2 image processing engine found in many Nikon D-SLR cameras. Designed without an optical low-pass filter, this highly sensitive DX-format sensor achieves high levels of sharpness, tonal gradation and minimised noise even at the highest ISO setting of 3200 (which is further extendable to 25600).

The seven rounded-blade diaphragm provides outstanding aperture control, and beautifully natural background blur.

NIKKOR Quality

Thanks to the outstanding optical sensing and processing system, the addition of advanced Nikon lens technology in the form of a custom-designed seven-element NIKKOR lens further helps to deliver superb precision and high contrast whatever the light conditions. The NIKKOR fixed wide-angle 18.5mm f/2.8 lens (28mm [135] equivalent[1]) offers exceptional definition throughout the entire aperture range and optical aberrations are minimised without the need for digital compensation. The seven rounded-blade iris diaphragm provides outstanding aperture control, reducing light where necessary and providing a beautifully natural background blur effect. And if you want more control of the shooting situation a manual focus ring allows you to override auto-focus.

A DX Format image sensor working with the EXPEED 2 image processing engine gets the best out of every shot.

Effortless Operation

For a crisp view of your intended shot or instant playback, a large, 7.5cm (3.0in.), 921k-dot, high-resolution LCD monitor provides the perfect solution. An anti-reflective coating and an automatic brightness control further ensure easy image confirmation in both bright and dimly lit places. Together with clear feature menus, the monitor also displays the advanced graphical user interface employed by the COOLPIX A to make the camera operation more like a Nikon D-SLR. For those who prefer a traditional viewfinder, an optional external optical viewfinder (DF-CP1) is available and provides an alternative to the LCD screen for composition.

Seven elements in five groups give the NIKKOR wide-angle prime lens incredible sharpness.

Movie Making

The COOLPIX A will satisfy any budding director looking for something portable yet versatile. At the touch of a button you can shoot Full HD (1080p) video complete with stereo sound and take advantage of the wide-angle lens to create the perfect scene. The subject-tracking AF feature keeps moving subjects in clear focus while creative control is maintained with options to adjust aperture, shutter speed and ISO sensitivity, and a range of filters and effects. So you can shoot movies with the exact visual effect you want. And with HDMI connectivity, your clearly defined recording can be enjoyed directly on HD televisions[2].

The DX-format CMOS sensor achieves high levels of tonal gradation and minimised noise even at the highest ISO.

Control in your Hands

Whether you prefer to take full advantage of the auto-mode function, use one of the many effects and filters to suit the shooting conditions, or take greater creative control with one of the PSAM modes, you’ll enjoy producing fantastic photographs and movies with simplistic ease. The mode dial offers easy access to key camera settings and provides smooth manual control. Two User Modes allow you to recall your preferred PSAM camera settings instantly, and two customisable Function Buttons let you bypass the menu and set shortcuts to your favourite camera settings. In addition to the usual range of JPEG image storage options, RAW format shooting also allows images to be shot and saved in high-quality NEF format, so uncompressed versions of your photos can be saved in their purest form.

Picture shows a close-up view of a harmonica.
Giving even more composition options, macro autofocus mode enables focusing as close as 10cm (4").

Superior Creativity

A variety of practical and innovative in-camera tools help to make the most of every shooting opportunity and ensure your pictures are captured perfectly. Boosting your creativity, in Picture Control you can customise images before you shoot. Choosing from six creative settings, you can determine the look and mood of your photos or video by choosing to change the image to Monochrome or Neutral for example. And if you like your photographs to take on a different style you can enhance your images on the spot with a wide range of Retouch options such as Cross Screen or Selective Colour, and edit shots with functions like Red-Eye Correction and Quick Retouch.

Light the Way

The COOLPIX A is compatible with many exciting Nikon accessories to enhance the camera’s capabilities even further. When you want to control the quality of light you can attach a more powerful Speedlight flash unit, or create different effects with lens filters attached using the UR-E14 adaptor ring. The adaptor ring can also be used with the HN-CP18 Lens Hood to help minimise lens flare, resulting in clearer photos with better contrast.

Stay Connected

For ultimate connectivity, share images that you are proud of by wirelessly transmitting them from your camera to an iOS or Android smartphone or tablet[3] using the optional WU-1a Wireless Mobile Adaptor. A wireless connection lets you share your creations with friends via social networks and email for instant reactions. And it is even possible to control your camera remotely from your smart device for group shots or to avoid disturbing the subject. Using your smart device or one of the optional WR-R10 or WR-T10 wireless remote control units, enables control of key camera functions from a distance too, even if there are obstacles between you and the camera. Ideal for shooting self-portraits or preventing camera shake during shutter release.

With supreme performance of D-SLR quality, the COOLPIX A from Nikon is the compact pro.

IT'S EXPENSIVE THOUGH?
======================
It's not a low end camera. Nikon have decided to go for the top end of the market with this lovely piece of kit.
They have to, to be fair, as most people have instant access to taking quick snapshots with their phones.
This is in a different league.
It is compact. It is solid. It feels and looks expensive.
It has a fixed 18.5mm lens (equivalent to that of 28 mm lens) with exceptional image quality.
And when you switch it on it has a wonderful response.

HAS IT GOT A ZOOM?
==================
No. Not even a digital zoom. It's a simple point and shoot camera. If that's important, then this camera is not for you.
What it does have though, is an ability to take quite astounding photographs.
It has lots and lots of pixels. (over 16 million) That means that the detail is quite remarkable.
So the zoom may not be that important.
You have the ability to trim any photographs.
Personally, I would prefer a digital zoom but I can live without it.

HAS IT GOT A MOVIE MODE?
=======================
Yes. This is one the issues that I have about the camera. It does have a movie mode but it's accessible via a menu. No click-wheel and no option to have easy access to that function. (There are two function buttons that can be re-allocated to functions but movie mode is not one of those options.)
This might simply be a bug bear of mine, as clearly those considering the camera may not actually need, or want the ability to records little movies.
I do like to record little movies. It does a wonderful job. One of it's features is the ability to track the subject.
So I would prefer an easy access option.
Again, I can can live without it.

The combination of lens and sensor is what makes this camera special. Images are sharp from corner to corner even wide open and pixel-peeping sharp even in the edges from f/4. Considering that the anti-aliasing filter is disposed off on a 16 Mpix sensor, this is a remarkable achievement. Paired with a good RAW processing program such as DxO Optics Pro, information can be harvested from deep down the small numbers of the 14-bit raw files, making production of single-shot HDR images a breeze. At the initially requested price, this camera was a bit steep, but being able to buy this camera at less than £400 through Amazon made it a real bargain. The best camera is one that is with you when it is needed. This point-and-shoot is light and small enough to go everywhere and the image quality makes it a winner. The only thing that is missing is an integrated viewfinder, instead of the ridiculously priced hot-shoe finder accessory. Nikon should realize that this camera does not cater to who will use this red-eye "feature", since the excellent sensor allows photos to be taken in candlelight. That space would be far better used for an integrated finder. A somwhat faster autofocus could also be on my wish list for the next edition. And finally ... please stop naming cameras in this league "Coolpix".

Instead of carrying a heavy wide angle zoom lens and DSLR I recommend you put this camera in your pocket. It's better for indoor group shots with fill in flash and superb for architectual and landscape scenes. If your subject moves then stick with the cheaper Nikon D3100 which does the same job for a quarter of the price!
After a couple of weeks I have found the best pictures were taken by friends and family handed the camera and asked to take the picture for me. In short the camera does all of the clever stuff.
