Firstly I think that you have to get your head round the fact that this is really a social media camera.

Purists might scoff at the idea of a Wi-Fi enabled camera with a built in Android operating system, but when you consider the fact that the Android operating system is probably the fastest selling mobile OS, outselling all other mobile OS's and that millions are in the hands of a younger more social media savvy generation it begins to make sense. It also has GPS so it will not only time stamp but place stamp your pictures with the location.

I will however admit to raising my eyebrows a little, at first.

Take a photograph or video and instantly upload it to You Tube, Facebook, Twitter or Panoramia, Google Earth or Flickr by Wi-Fi or Bluetooth transfer. Admittedly many mobile phones can do pretty much the same thing, and a true camera can do the same thing but via a computer, but combine the two and you have the opportunity to upload some really decent pictures to the web, instantly. This immediacy will appeal to the generation that it is aimed at. You can even send an email.

The Android OS can also add more functionality, it may also be updateable. It does not feel like a mobile phone but it comes across strongly as a camera that has an operating system that just happens to be Android.

My usual compact camera is a manual/auto Nikon P300 so I'll look to compare the camera qualities.

As a camera this is a comfortable to hold point and shoot compact with a 10x zoom. It feels nice and well balanced in the hand, light but solid. It has a very good build quality.

Controls and the menu are typical Android, with a physical home, menu and back button on the right hand side of the touch screen.... The touch screen is sublime, accurate, smooth and sharp. It can double up as an alarm clock. The rear screen is large and bright and it holds up well in bright sunshine, clear and sharp. The menu is easy to access and settings are just as easy to change.

As with most cameras if you disable the start screen in the menu, it is pretty quick from being switched on to taking your first photo, still slightly behind the P300 but it has a little more thinking to do. Leaving the start screen on slows the whole process to seconds so switch it off, it's not necessary and gets in the way.

The flash is built in to the front of the camera, so you won't have to delay by popping up a flash before taking your pictures in auto mode.

It is very easy to use; you can use the physical button on the top of the camera or the touch screen to take the photograph. It has 17 scene modes, Portraits, Night, Sports, Beach, Close Ups and even Food and Pets. Colour performance appears good without producing over saturated pictures.

Mega pixels are not everything in the world of photography though some people might try and tell you differently. The quality of the lens and the sensor count far more. The CMOS sensor in this camera is better than average almost `high end' and works well, giving very decent quality and performance.

Full HD video can be taken, the quality of the video is very good, wind noise is also not too much of problem, it produces a very clean sound.

Battery life is nowhere as good as my P300 which incidentally has the same battery. It's adequate but that's all. I managed 157 photos off one charge.

Charging is done with the lithium battery installed in the camera. A separate charger will be necessary for a spare battery.

One word of warning, there are many fake Nikon batteries on the market, check out the Nikon website to see what you should look for. Only buy authorised ones and if they are a little `cheap' beware they could damage your camera. Some cheap fakes can be overcharged and will overheat in the camera and break it. I've been there.

The more the concept of an Android camera is developed the better it will become; it is truly an innovative product.

The downsides are that it lacks 3G, but you can connect it to a mobile used as a 3G hotspot and that the battery life is slightly compromised but this is not a deal breaker.

Does it deserve a 5 star rating, not quite, on innovation yes, but on price and camera features no. However the quality of the camera is good and I like the 'daring' of it. Read more ›

An Android camera?

What will they think of next? Telephones that you can carry round with you? Horseless carriages? Women's suffrage? God forbid.
Basically what this is is a compact camera but with an Android platform and touch screen tacked on. It's an interesting idea but I do struggle to see the benefit of being able to play Angry Birds on my compact camera, when I can already do it on my moby...

In the box

The camera comes neatly packaged in a commendably busy little box with a number of accessories and paperwork. You get:
= The camera
= A USB cable
= A lanyard
= A rechargeable Li-ion battery
= A charger adapter
= A quick start manual.

There is no SD card provided so you may need to buy one of these (although see "Image Storage" below) and neither is there a camera case.

Size
====
The camera itself is about the size of a packet of cigarettes, but a little deeper, and it slips into a pocket as easily as a small mobile phone. It's light enough to be used comfortably one-handed but heavy enough to retain a nice heft.

Looks and layout
================
This is quite a good looking camera. It's almost perfectly rectangular, but with rounded corners and a slight bulge for the zoom lens. It looks clean and uncluttered and feels well engineered and robust. It's probably not at its best in white and I personally would prefer black or silver.

The top of the housing carries the zoom control and shutter button and the on-off switch. The right hand side of the housing has a couple of fiddly wee flaps that gain access to the USB and HDML ports and between these is a lanyard loop.... Read more ›

I purchased this recently and have been pleasantly suprised by it.

Firstly the main competitor at the moment is the Samsung Galaxy ( which is almost double the price of this Nikon) and is certainly much bigger in size than the Nikon and will not fit into a pocket like the Nikon will.
The camera is very well made -solid and instills confidence in use. The photos are great -but bear in mind you do not have any where near as much control over the settings ( compared to the Samsung Galaxy )-that said the photos I have taken in dull light on auto have been smooth and well produced and with excellent definition and colour. Sunny conditions are superb. Where this camera shines is the wi-fi facility and also the long zoom capability built into a small pocket size camera.
Uploading a photo is very easy via the nikon picturetown software -easily downloaded onto the camera --the downside to this is that it eats the battery -which is not very good at best ( maybe 140 shots )so buy a spare genuine Nikon battery. Overall this is a super camera -well made and capable of excellent photos -add to that the facitily to upload to any wif fi- or bluetooth device for sharing pictures and you have a winner plus its pocketable -unlike the Samsung and its much cheaper and better made than the Sansung. Ive used both and I definitely recommend the Nikon.

The Nikon Coolpix S800C Android Compact Digital Camera is a small compact digital camera with a fully integrated Android operating system built into the camera. So in a nutshell, the camera's basically like a modern-day iPhone or the like, without the phone side, and instead predominantly based around being a camera.

Okay, so the first thing I feel I need to say is that if you've already got an Android phone, then there really is no point in having this particular type of camera (unless you really do just love to have gadgets). After all, apart from being able to easily (and almost instantly) upload your photos onto social media sites or other such websites after just taking the pictures, the Android camera doesn't really offer anything additional to you that your Android phone wouldn't already do.

But if (like me and my wife) you haven't got yourself a nifty phone that does all this then it can be a pretty cool little gadget to have. It's horses for courses really. If you want something with Android capabilities, and haven't already got something that does this, then you may well want to consider this little beauty if you're thinking about getting yourself a new digital camera.

First up, as soon as you've set up all the Android malarkey (which is pretty easy to do it must be said), then you'll notice that it's just like an iPhone in the way it works and it's general layout. When you turn it on, you've got to do that fancy `swipe' on the touchscreen to access the main menu screen.... From here you can choose to use the camera to take photos, take video footage (in stunning HD I must add), view all your pics/videos, check your calendar, check your emails, play music, watch films, go on the internet, download stuff, or access your Apps (which are stored on a separate menu page so that your main menu page doesn't become too cluttered).

So, first up (and probably most importantly), what's the actual camera like? Well, quite surprisingly, it's not all that good it must be said. Okay, so it's no SLR and it's still just a point-and-shoot compact, but nevertheless, even with this in mind, both my wife and I have found that the camera really isn't all that good at performing its main use. The photos (in general) are often a little blurry, it really struggles in low light, and it can't handle capturing fast-moving images. However, the pictures do come out huge, with good solid colour and strong crisp quality when it's working at its best. My advice would be to really spend some time getting properly acquainted with the capabilities of the camera when you first get it, and play around with the various settings so that you can get the most out of the camera.

The zoom function is certainly one of the strong aspects to the camera. The zoom is swift and fluid, extending the reach of the camera to quite impressive lengths. Again, with the panorama mode, the camera can capture a clean and crisp sweep, without incorporating poor stitching into the image or any obvious blurred edging.

The 'Lens-shift Vibration Reduction' on the camera does work quite well. If you're zoomed into something that's quite far away, the camera does compensate for a bit of shaking. It's not the best, and it certainly can't handle a lot of shaking (say if you were snapping something out of a moving car), but it's nevertheless quite good.

The 'one-touch-screen' option for quickly snapping off a photo by just tapping the screen, is handy when you're out and about and want to capture something quickly. Again, it's like an Android phone in many aspects like this - but perhaps with a (slightly) better camera function.

Now, on to the Android and Wi-fi capabilities. Our experience has been that this is where the camera is really hit and miss. After having the camera for a good couple of months, we've found that we often need to fully reboot the camera (we had to go onto the online instruction manual to find out how to perform this) in order to establish a Wi-fi connection. Since having the camera, we've needed to perform this reboot about five or six times, otherwise the Wi-fi connects for about 2 seconds, then suddenly disconnects itself. Furthermore, at one stage and from out of the blue, the camera suddenly decided that it didn't like the memory card we had been using fine up to this point. A message suddenly popped up simply stating "This card cannot be used". Fear not, if this happens, don't go out and buy a new memory card, just reboot the camera (Settings/Privacy/Reboot) and all of a sudden it decides that your card's fine again. Hmmmm...the word 'temperamental' springs to mind!

Anyway, once you've established your Wi-fi connection (which to be fair is most of the time and easy to do), it takes about 10 seconds to load up your internet homepage. Surfing the web is quite a slow and clunky affair, although this obviously often depends upon your internet speed. But please don't buy this camera thinking you'll be zipping around the web like there's no tomorrow. It's more like a cautious plod than a speeding rocket.

Furthermore, if you're not all that close to the source of the Wi-fi hot-spot then you're going to find that the camera's going to struggle with the connection somewhat. In comparison to iPhones etc, the Wi-fi capabilities really are quite poor. Just sit in a coffee shop with free Wi-fi access and see how well the camera performs against all the other people using the Wi-fi on their phones and laptops around you! You won't be smiling!

Being Android, you can download whatever Apps you want. However, you should bear in mind that it's still a camera and not a phone, so things such as Skype aren't going to work all that well on it. Indeed, we've found that when using Skype, it's quite hard to hear what the person at the other end is saying (there doesn't seem to be a way of turning the volume up enough), and of course, they can't see you at the same time that you see them (i.e. the camera's lens is on the other side of the camera).

Battery life is also a bit of an issue. Using the Android functionality, or watching films and the like, really saps the battery. So, if you're planning to use it on a long journey, then it's best to bring along a fully charged spare (or two). Also, the battery is only charged whilst it's inside the camera (i.e. it doesn't come with an external charger), so you can only charge the battery with the camera hooked up to a power source (i.e. a plug socket or a laptop etc). Furthermore, and this really can be incredibly frustrating, whilst the battery is being charged you cannot access anything on the camera whatsoever. So don't go on holiday thinking that you can watch a movie or something whilst you're recharging the battery, because all you'll see is a completely blank screen!

So, after using the camera for a good couple of months, what are our final impressions? Completely ignoring price (after all what's expensive for one person is quite a fair price for another), the camera performs okay, but not great. If you invest enough time into the camera, playing around with the settings etc, then you can snap off some half-decent pics. Okay, so on a good day you can produce some truly stunning shots. However, the camera does struggle when the lighting isn't the best, or things are moving within the frame, or you're trying to get a really close-up Macro shot. As for the Android/Wi-fi performance - well, it's once again just okay. Not the fastest or most reliable. But once you know what its capabilities are and what to do when it plays up, then it's not too bad. Although it's noticeably not as good as an Android phone! However, the real disappointment is with the annoying like niggles that the camera has, such as the poor battery life, when charging the camera it cannot do anything else, and there being no external charger.

So, my advice would be to properly weigh up what you want with a new digital camera, and think about what your general day-to-day usage will be with it before parting with your hard-earned cash. Read more ›
