5.0 out of 5 stars Buy right or buy twice 6 Jan 2012
Colour Name:Camouflage
This camera is the one I should have bought initially. I went into depth in researching this type of camera before purchasing (mainly: Panasonic Lumix FT3, Olympus TG series, Pentax Optio WG-1 and Fujifilm XP30, to name but a few) and reasoned that cost and need did not warrant the spend. I was sorely mistaken. I bought the Coolpix S3100 before this and it lasted only 4 weeks. The lens mechanism has failed at the slightest hint of dust. I will be returning to the store as soon as I get back.
- It does everything I need it to and then some.
- I was not interested in the GPS, but there is no alternative model.
- This camera is the best I have seen in this category and I have tried all the other major brands.
- I have yet to test it's underwater capabilities, but again I only want it to survive a wet day out or being used on the ski slopes. Done.
- The video is excellent quality, and the sound gain for this class of camera cannot be faulted.
- Picture quality is really good and though it isn't punted as good for low lux, it does better than any other I have used.
- Optical Zoom and panoramic really produce crisp clear photos.
- Operation is really easy and point of need learning will get you using most of the main functions without having to refer to the manual.
- I never use camera software as I am happy with my computer's own photo software, so no comment there.
- I was disappointed that there is no lens cover, but in hindsight the recess and cover glass do more than enough to protect the lens and a cover would do more to trap and allow the ingress of dust. Experience with an earlier model Olympus TG series taught me that.
- I carry it in a soft fabric case (for sunglasses) to keep it protected from dust and it lives in my pocket.

5.0 out of 5 stars All as promised 27 Oct 2011
By Jolyon
Colour Name:Black
Bought this camera (and a spare battery) for a long trip down the Colorado on a raft - I took hundreds of pictures and a few videos in some very challenging environments - wet, heat, humidity and fine sand - and had no problems at all. The screen however does have some surface scratches which is annoying. The resulting picture and video quality is good - even for wide landscapes and poor light - and battery life was good. I did however find the menu options confusing to a meer mortal who does not understand the 'photographic language' that is on offer and battery life was consumed if you reviewed pictures/video on a regular basis - tip, don't reveiw pictures/video if you are on a long trip! I did not really understand the GPS function which to me is a 'nice to have' rather then a must and I had trouble trying to find how to change the data and time to local time having originally set it all up in the UK. Overall I am very pleased with this camera.

2.0 out of 5 stars GPS Seems A Bit Hit Or Miss - Moisture In Camera 16 April 2012
By Ian Mitchell TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Colour Name:Orange|Amazon Verified Purchase
Just to start, I see a new model is now on offer called the AW100S.

It would seem it is the same but minus the "World Map" function which I guess reduces the price.

Before I ever took my one in the water I noted condensation on the inside of the lens and between photos I had to keep my warm finger on the lens to de-fog it.

I think after leaving the camera end open with the hatch at the top that I have got any moisture out (on a central heating radiator with battery and SD Card removed). Only time will tell.

Since then I have had it under water to about 4.3 metres and that seems to have done it no harm.

Photos it takes on the surface are generally pretty good but with very little manual override control.

The GPS function sometimes works very well getting a good fix virtually instant but other times, even in the middle of nowhere it fails.

You can download a GPS Quickfix file from Nikon but this is only valid for seven days! Surely a quickfix file called store data for say a month?

After having several cameras now with GPS in to geotag my photos made by Panasonic, Casio, Pentax and an earlier Nikon (The P6000) I have come to the conclusion the best thing to do to tag photos is with a separate GPS Logger.

I now use a Holux GPSport 260 Holux GPSport GR-260 Data Logger which I can now use with any of my camera including my EOS 7D as long as the camera clock is set accurately.

Then with the software provided with it on my computer it updates the EXIF data based on the GPS Log.

EDIT: 08/05/12

I have now had my camera down to 9.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Impressive 27 May 2012
By Dad TOP 500 REVIEWER
Colour Name:Black
I have had this camera a few days now and have been very impressed with the tests I've put it through thus far. This camera does everything Nikon says it will and does them all wonderfully.

Overall Build
This is a small camera in your hands which is a good and bad thing. It's great because it means it's easy to slip in your pants or shirt pocket and always keep with you. It weighs little enough that you hardly notice it's there. I see where some people could see this as an issue because the buttons on it are very small in order to have the back LCD as large as possible. It does not feel cheap even though it's made out of plastic and although I don't plan on doing a drop test, I am confident it would survive a drop from chest high.

Picture Quality
With an 8GB SD card I don't see a reason to shoot at any other setting than the highest resolution, so all my playing around with it was done at this setting. The JPEGs that come out look great. The images are sharp, have good color and the auto whitebalance has done an amazing job. The main thing I was worried about was having to do difficult WB corrections after the fact if it wasn't right on with the WB, but so far it has been spot on in full sun shots, shady shots, indoor with incandescent and indoor with fluorescent lights. I honestly think the 16MP is a little overkill, but will keep shooting at full resolution as I don't know when I'll need those extra pixels. Lastly, low light shooting has definitely exceeded my expectations. I thought with a sensor as small as this one there would be lots of noise in the final result but even at the higher ISO levels the pictures are very clear and useable.

Video
I don't really plan on using this for video too much but have tested it out nonetheless.
