Push the Limits

Making a significant splash in Nikon’s pool of rugged tech, the COOLPIX AW120 is designed to follow you on adventures high or low, wet or dry. Able to withstand knocks and shocks in any environment, this tough little camera is waterproof to 18m, shockproof from heights up to 2m and freeze-proof to -10°C. So whether you enjoy cross-skiing in the alps, diving in the Red Sea or trekking in extreme terrain, every slide, splash, and climb can be recorded with exceptional clarity. Even when you're underwater or wearing thick gloves, a dedicated Action Control button allows you to operate the camera one-handed.

Superior Performance

In the COOLPIX AW120, Nikon has successfully created a sturdy, feature-rich camera without compromising on the high performance customers have come to expect. The ultra-wide 24-120mm f/2.8 5x optical zoom lens[1] gives optimal brightness even in the darkest of scenes on land or underwater. When you need even more reach, zoom up to 10x with Dynamic Fine Zoom while maintaining maximum image resolution. No matter where you are, the camera’s back-illuminated 16 Megapixel CMOS sensor ensures you can achieve great performance and clear images with low noise, even when shooting in low light conditions like a cave, or beneath the thick canopy of a rainforest.

FREEZEPROOF: The ultra-wide 24-120mm f/2.8 5x optical zoom lens covers the angles you need while Dynamic Fine Zoom extends the zoom to 10x retaining maximum image resolution.

Stay Connected

With built-in Wi-Fi, the COOLPIX AW120 makes it easy to share great action shots while the adrenaline is still pumping. In a few simple steps you can send photos directly to any iOS or Android smart device ready to upload to Facebook, Instagram and other social networking sites[2]. The Wi-Fi function also makes it possible to control the camera remotely and preview the scene you’re shooting using the connected smart device.

Tracking Explorations

Enriching your sharing experience still further, you can add detailed location information to photos using the built-in GPS function. Recording latitude and longitude as Geotags, the clever tracking tool can also log your route, even when the camera is turned off. Other essential data like altitude, depth, atmospheric pressure and water pressure readings can also be viewed thanks to Quick Display. Perfect for those who love to travel, the tracking information can then be displayed using Nikon’s ViewNX 2 software or photo sharing sites like Nikon Image Space.

Motion Pictures

When adventures require more than stills, you can switch instantly from photo to video with one touch of the dedicated movie-record button and record in Full HD (1080p). Using the optical zoom with autofocus you’ll shoot exceptional quality video complete with stereo sound, and the COOLPIX AW120 will also record in slow or fast motion at speeds of 15-240fps. Ensuring rock-steady recordings, Hybrid Vibration Reduction combines Lens-shift VR and Electronic VR to enhance stability and counters the effects of camera shake in real time. Framing your shots perfectly on the 7.5cm (3 inch) 921k-dot OLED screen, you can play back and decide if you need another take. The OLED screen has both an anti-reflection coating and 5-level brightness adjustment for clear shooting and playback, even in bright sunlight. As an exciting day of filming comes to a close, with HDMI connectivity your clear, crisp action movie can be enjoyed directly on HD televisions[3].

The lens can focus down to 1cm in Macro mode while location, altitude, depth, atmospheric pressure and water pressure readings can all be included in your images.

Automatic Enhancements

Capturing every stunt, jump and dive in perfect clarity, Nikon has ensured that the COOLPIX AW120 is fully loaded with auto-mode functions, effects and filters so you don’t miss that jaw-dropping shot. For fast activities, High-speed continuous shooting takes up to 5 shots at around 6.9fps with Best Shot Selector automatically selecting the sharpest image. When adventures move into badly lit areas, the camera’s dedicated light modes, like the Backlighting scene mode used in combination with Auto HDR, or Night Portrait mode, deliver superb results in any light, even without a tripod. Underwater mode automatically adjusts the camera’s white balance setting to capture underwater scenes just as you see them and Scene Modes such as Easy Panorama 360°/180° or Sunset automatically work to bring out the shot’s full potential.

Ready For Action

An irresistible combination of robust functionality and minimalist design, the Nikon COOLPIX AW120 couldn’t be easier to handle and operate. Measuring approximately 110 x 66 x 26mm and weighing around 213g including the battery, this compact travel companion won’t slow you down. Power for the camera is provided by a rechargeable Li-ion Battery which is supplied together with a Charging AC Adaptor, allowing the battery to be charged in the camera. High-speed USB charging via your laptop is also possible using the USB cable provided. In addition to the camera’s internal memory (approx 329MB), SD, SDHC and SDXC memory cards (available separately) are all compatible. If you need somewhere to store all those amazing action shots, Nikon offers their customers 20GB of online cloud storage on the dedicated Nikon image storage and sharing site, Nikon Image Space.

For epic adventures and bumpy rides the COOLPIX AW120 from Nikon is an intelligent camera with outstanding performance everytime.

The menu structure of this Nikon is alien to someone who's used Canon and Olympus for many years but I think that now I'm starting to get the hang of it. But to sum up my findings so far... The picture quality is great for a camera of this size and the wider than usual lens does work well for the type of photography that I'm interested in, sailing , walking etc. But the zoom also provides great scope for those close up shots.

Plus points:
Great pictures with good colour balance
Good sensitivity from the slightly larger lens
Excellent video picture quality (though the zoom motor noise is audible and zooming is in steps rather than smooth)
Lots of preset programme options - very few manual ones.

Negative points: (maybe just me)
Awkward menu structure
"shake and move" menu navigation may work underwater but just seems random to me. Again maybe it takes time to understand what it is meant to be doing.
No auto-bracket function though there is a built in HDR mode that seems to work.

Still to try...
Splashing whilst sailing and Underwater (maybe when capsized).

Having had a few issues with the AW110 - one with a clicking front panel and one that wouldn't focus on anything remotely dark I ordered the AW120 with some trepidation.

However so far it has worked well producing good quality images for a compact camera with all the features I have tested, including the remote control via an iphone working well. The design is a bit nicer than the 110 both in terms of layout and the larger blocks of colour on the paint-job.

Its quite chunky for a compact camera both in weight and dimensions but this does seem to be largely due to the number of features that it includes, the build feels solid, though i did apply a screen protector as these always feel like the weakest link and my 110 scratched easily.

A couple of flaws from my perspective are that there is a button on the side that activates a menu for choosing shooting options that seems to only be operable using an infuriating motion sensor rather than the usual d-pad for everything else, no idea why it couldn't be both or selectable.

Also when not switched on there is a rattle/knocking noise if you move the camera around that I figure must be the lens before its powered up, not a flaw as such but a bit odd.

The one crucial thing i haven't tested yet is the waterproof capabilities, though with the 110 that seemed to work fine and it doesn't appear that the door etc has been changed from that, I will update once I have used it in the water.

I did not buy this camera from Amazon, but I wish I did, as Amazon customer services has never let me down, however Jessops customer services were shocking and after returning the camera to the store and being unprofessionally handled, I did not even receive a full refund. Firstly my Samsung Galaxy S4 takes far superior photo's than this camera. I did not bother trying under water because it struggles out of the water to take a decent snap. The photos were either blurry or low quality. Even following the instructions and playing with the settings did not improve the quality. I felt this camera was no longer suited for me so it was time to return it. It feels like Nikon has spent all the time and effort filling this camera with a lot of fan-dandled extras. The all weather, under water rough terrain camera did appeal to me, But I do not see the point with all that, if it can't even take a decent photo. I feel this camera's sensor and back light has taken a step back a few years. I wished I took my IPAD into the Jessops store with the Nikon Wireless mobility App loaded onto it, then wirelessly transferred a photo from the camera to the IPADs high resolution screen because the quality looks OK on the cameras OLED screen but looks very low quality on a bigger screen. Please research and read lots of reviews before you buy. I'am very disappointed with my first Nikon and ultimately it will be my last.
