Product Description

Picture shows a view of a scuba diver taken from underneath and silhouetted against the bright light at the surface.
Waterproof, shockproof, freeze-proof, and dustproof, the Nikon 1 AW1 is ready for every stylish adventure.

From epic adventure to everyday action, the Nikon 1 AW1 delivers on every level. Small enough to carry, and fast enough to leap into action, this adventure-proof camera is protected from accidents and whatever Mother Nature might have in store. With an impressive array of sophisticated in-camera features and Nikon’s advanced hybrid autofocus system, the Nikon 1 AW1 ensures every picture is sharp and bright, and every movie smooth and natural. Compatible with the complete range of dedicated, interchangeable 1 NIKKOR lenses, including the two latest water and shockproof models, you’ll record still images and movies without compromise.

A fusion of style, portability and high performance, with the added benefit of all-weather protection, the Nikon 1 AW1 is ready to capture great shots in any situation.

Picture shows a man riding a jet-ski, passing the camera at high speed.
Super fast advanced Hybrid AF ensures that you capture precisely focused photos and movies, every time - even in low light.
Picture shows a close-up view of a fish guarding its eggs.
Waterproof to 15m, the built-in compact flash unit illuminates the details of underwater subjects you can get close to, or land based subjects up to 6m away.

Adventure-proof

Able to withstand knocks and shocks in any environment the Nikon 1 AW1 is waterproof to 15m, shockproof from heights up to 2m, freeze-proof to -10°C, and fully dustproof[1]. Rubber sealing at critical points, as well as an O-ring for the lens mount, ensure water doesn’t enter the camera, while double-locking battery and USB/HDMI compartment covers reduce the chances of accidental opening. If you’re planning a snorkelling trip, the pop-up flash is also waterproof to the same depth as the camera, so you can capture low-light scenes underwater.

Fast Action, Superior Image Quality

Action doesn’t wait, and with the Nikon 1 AW1 you don’t need to either. The quick, precise Nikon 1 advanced hybrid AF system boasts fast phase-detection AF for high-speed movement, and contrast-detect AF for capturing subtle detail. The 14.2-megapixel CX-format CMOS sensor offers an ISO range up to 6400 for superb low-light performance and astonishing clarity. Enabling carefree shooting at its best, Nikon’s EXPEED 3A dual-processing engine powers continuous shooting at 15fps with autofocus, and up to 60fps with fixed-point AF, giving you the ability to capture high-quality images of even super-fast action[2].

Effortless Outdoor Shooting

An irresistible combination of robust functionality and classic minimalist design, the Nikon 1 AW1 couldn’t be easier to handle and operate. The non-slip grip and extra space between control buttons facilitates easier operation, while the Outdoor display mode makes menus easier to read when shooting under bright sunlight or in murky underwater conditions. One-touch Action Control allows you to change shooting mode, adjust settings, and review photos or movies simply by pressing the button and tilting the camera to the left or right. This one-hand operation, manageable even with gloves on, adds a whole new dimension to shooting ease, and by releasing the Action Control button your settings are fixed ready to capture the moment.

The 14.2-megapixel CX-format CMOS sensor offers an ISO range up to 6400 for beautiful low-light detail.

Pinpoint your Location

The Nikon 1 AW1 offers a variety of exciting in-camera environmental sensing functions that help keep track of your adventures as well as making composition easier. Support for both GPS and GLONASS means the camera can accurately and reliably determine your location. A dual altimeter/depth gauge lets you track altitude from –500m to 4,500m or capture how deep you are underwater. An electronic compass allows you to check your heading, and when shooting underwater or on an uneven surface the virtual horizon tool assists in keeping the camera level. Location information is both visible on screen and included with your photos in the EXIF image data, so the supplied ViewNX 2 software can later display all your pictures on a map.

Movie Magic

Shooting Full HD 1080p movies complete with stereo sound, the Nikon 1 AW1 makes it possible to capture footage underwater, in freezing temperatures, or in the middle of fast-moving action. In Advanced Movie Mode, creative control is enhanced with options to adjust aperture, shutter speed, ISO sensitivity, filters and effects. You can also film with a smaller frame size, achieve dramatic effects in extreme slow motion and while recording HD movies you can still take a full-resolution photo without skipping a frame. Once you have your movie in the can, the recording can be enjoyed directly on HD televisions thanks to integrated HDMI connectivity[3].

Creative freedom

The Nikon 1 AW1 knows how to have fun and with a wide range of filters and effects can turn ordinary shots into extraordinary masterpieces. Creative Mode lets you apply filters and effects to photos before you shoot, or access PSAM shooting modes for total control. Live Image Control lets you intuitively explore settings to freeze action, tweak lighting, or blur backgrounds. Simply adjust the on-screen control bars until the preview image looks the way you want it, then shoot to capture your perfectly composed photo.

Montage of four different images: Monochrome view of a river bridge; Landscape view of a tropical cove; Close-up view of a cool drink; and Macro view of coral fronds underwater.
Just too much to show. The Nikon 1 AW1 covers everything from moody monochrome views and tropical landscapes, through to close-ups of cool drinks and coral fronds.

Life Through a Lens

The best lenses lead to the best images, and NIKKOR lenses are nothing short of exceptional, with a wide range of compatible NIKKOR 1 lenses available for the Nikon 1 AW1. The latest 1 NIKKOR AW 11–27.5mm f/3.5–5.6 zoom lens and the 1 NIKKOR AW 10mm f/2.8 wide-angle lens are not only as stylish and robust as the camera but are also water, shock and freeze-proof. For still more possibilities, the optional FT1 mount adapter even lets the Nikon 1 AW1 use NIKKOR DSLR lenses.

Stay Connected

To take full advantage of the camera’s potential the Nikon 1 AW1 is compatible with a wide range of optional accessories including the WU-1b Wireless Mobile Adapter[4] that lets you share images in an instant, or remotely control the camera with a smartphone.

Impeccable in every way, don't just love life, live it, with Nikon 1 AW1.

I bought this camera because I do a lot of action holidays, sailing, scuba diving, road trips, and needed a go anywhere camera with the option for interchangeable lenses.

So far I have been very pleased with it, the picture quality is excellent, the autofocus always seems to get it right and it performs well even in low light conditions. I bought the silicone jacket for the body and lens, which fit very well and get a lot of comments (I chose the bright orange) and help protect the camera from me... :S

The camera claims to be waterproof to 15m I think, shock proof and freeze proof, I haven't tested all these yet, but plan to take it sailing with me next year.

Also bought the wireless adapter, which creates a wifi hotspot you can connect your tablet or phone to, most of the time though I just use an sd card adapter for transferring images. The wireless module also allows you to remote control the camera.

I have both the lenses, although use the zoom Le s most of the time. Thinking of adding a Nikkor 1 power zoom lens...

I bought this camera to take on a trip to Borneo. On the whole I am very pleased with it, especially when used with the adaptor for Nikon F mount lenses. I used it in a number of extreme situations, including fast flowing rivers, and it lived up to its claim of being water proof. The only problem was that in some situations both the lens and the viewing screen became foggy with condensation, making the resulting shots/video almost unusable. I did make sure that the 'O' ring was kept greased, and putting camera and lens in a container of dry rice did mitigate the problem, but not cure it completely. It could be that under those conditions it is best not to swap the waterproof lens for a standard 'F' mount lens, but the ability to do that was one of the reasons for buying this camera. If anyone from Nikon reads this I would be grateful for advice. This is the only reason for the 3-star rating.

When not fogged, the camera produced great results, and is easy to use although it is too easy to press the video button instead of the photo button - this would have given it a 4-star rating. For its chip-size it was remarkably good in low light, although within obvious limits.

I am a professional and bought this camera for my holidays. I was working great for a day or two, but after I used it under water twice (2 ft deep) the LCD and lens became foggy. From then on I was unable to take clear images or record good quality video. I recommend to wait for Nikon to fix the problem before buying this camera. Otherwise it is really a great. I would definitely give it 5 stars if it wouldn't leak.

I need to reduce the weight and quantity of equipment carried, and still be able to shoot underwater. Does all I ask of it. I am not a fan of 'Auto everything', but have tried letting the camera decide the settings I have to admit it works very well in most situations. Default Auto focus sometimes gets confused (e.g. blurred Parrot in front of perfectly focused tree trunk and foliage) but a quick selection of 'centre spot' soon fixed that. Minor niggle the GPS position displayed on the LCD put me 2' East of the Prime Meridian when in fact I am 2' West (also Mexico is displayed as 90' East when it is 90'West) but the data stored with the image is correct so not a big problem, a future firmware update will fix that I am sure.
