Product Description

This superior optical system effectively corrects sagittal coma flare and coma aberration.

Designed specifically with today’s DSLR users in mind, the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G lens from Nikon is ideal for photographers of all levels looking to get creative. Known for its reliability, clarity and devotion to the needs of passionate photographers, NIKKOR, the exclusive lens brand from Nikon, is on a quest to create the finest optics in the world. And with this ultra-fast supreme lens you can expect just that, delivering outstanding image quality with edge-to-edge sharpness and high contrast at any aperture or focus distance.

Perfect for portraits, landscapes, low-light scenes and more, the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G lens offers passionate photographers an easy and affordable way to discover the difference wide aperture can make.

Life Through a Lens

Nikon recognises that every photographer is unique, seeing the world in very different ways. So whatever your ideas, experience or creative vision, NIKKOR offers an array of lenses to draw out your potential. This fast, well-balanced 50mm wide-aperture standard lens[1] with a maximum aperture of f/1.4 captures images with exquisite sharpness even in low light situations. Realising a high Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) this fixed-focal length lens provides photographers with an effortless way to shoot natural-looking picture blur with a shallow depth of field. And with these conditions a bright viewfinder image is created making it easier to achieve the very best composition.

A lens hood and soft carrying pouch are supplied.

Strikingly Crisp

Providing outstanding optical performance the lens comprises an 8 element, 7 group configuration and a nine rounded-blade iris diaphragm which renders images with a more natural appearance in out-of-focus areas. Efficiently correcting sagittal coma flare and other types of lens aberrations, the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G offers great precision towards the edges of the frame particularly when using large apertures.

Silent Precision

Nikon's AF-S technology is yet another reason why professional photographers like NIKKOR lenses. Nikon’s exclusive Silent Wave Motor (SWM) converts travelling waves into rotational energy to focus the optics. This enables high-speed autofocusing that’s extremely accurate and super quiet. So for discrete shooting you can set up the shot in an instant and camera focusing won’t disturb sensitive subjects like wildlife.

Switching Focus

Combining ease-of-use and maximum precision the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G Lens has two focus modes. In addition to Manual focus, Manual-priority autofocus (M/A) allows you to switch from autofocus to manual operation with virtually no time lag, even during AF servo operation and regardless of the AF mode in use. This gives all the benefits of fast, automatic focusing while still retaining the ability to make fine focus adjustments before taking the shot.

The AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G lens is perfect for portraits, landscapes, travel and more.

Intelligent System

Nikon's Internal focus (IF) technology limits all the optical movement to the interior of the non-extending lens barrel. This intelligent system allows for a more compact and lightweight design as well as a closer focusing distance to approximately 45cm (1.5ft). With the non-rotating front element the use of circular polarizing filters and lens-mounted flash accessories is possible making this lens a versatile option.

NIKKOR Quality

Cleverly crafted in a way that only an optical manufacturer can understand, Nikon creates technologies that make NIKKOR lenses the best choice for any type of still or moving imagery. Omitting the need for an aperture ring, G-type lens aperture is controlled electronically through the camera. Electronic adjustment is not only very efficient but also allows Nikon to place a weather sealing on the lens mount, so you can shoot with complete confidence.

The AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G lens from Nikon is ready to capture creative photography in the widest variety of conditions.

[1] Focal length of 50mm when used on a camera with an FX sensor. When fitted to a DX-format DSLR this lens has an angle of view equivalent to that of a 75mm lens in 35mm [135] format.

5.0 out of 5 stars PRIME 30 Jan 2009
By Kennedy
This is a review from an enthusiast, not a pro. Pros please consult pro reviews!

I was tired of the crummy pictures I was getting from the D40s varizoom kit lens. If, like me, you're photographing family and friends 95% of the time, then a 50mm prime lens will change the way you take pictures.

As a portrait lens it is perfect - the soft focus results you get with wide apertures are far better than I ever got by using the long end of the varizoom. If you need to get wide, just stand back.

And if you're shooting in available light, which we all are, then f1,4 is a necessity if you don't want 5000 bland flashlight photos on your hard drive. The lens delivers beautiful contrast, razor sharp focus where you want it, and creamy soft focus backgrounds. I'm bowled over by the pictures I'm getting out of it. You will never go back to your varizooms.

Build quality: the lens is well made, compact, with a confident auto-focus (that is, it can keep up with my 2 year old, who is in perpetual motion).

There's a lot of direct comparisons with the (actually more expensive) Sigma 1,4. I also tried that lens in the shop, as the salesman assured me that it it was a better piece of glass, but I simply found it heavy and cumbersome by comparison. The Nikon lens is much more smaller, solid without being heavy, and keeps the camera light and quick to use.

Very, very much recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Low Light Prime 29 May 2011
This is the lens for Low light. You have many options available for 50mm shooting with Nikon but currently this is the fastest (f/1.4) lens they make with autofocus. This is obviously extremely important for low light performance. It has a very accurate silent wave motor for great AF performance. However, be aware that this AF lens is not lightening fast in terms of autofocus. This is due to the extreme accuracy the motor needs to have to pull an image to focus at f/1.4. It's still not "that" slow - for example children running about etc I have no problem getting the shots of my son when he is doing this.

50mm lenses are thought of as a 'standard length' - whatever that really means, however I find that it's a great lens to pop on the camera and take with you anywhere. Not too wide, not too telephoto in that sense.

Compared to the other 50's this is the best and fastest. The 1.8G is slightly newer but I just don't see the point in 1.8 if you can have 1.4. Isn't the main reason we shoot primes - speed and bokeh?

Buy this lens, you will not regret it. Then add an 85mm 1.4!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Value FX Nifty Fifty or DX Portrait Lens 5 Jun 2011
By Chris R
I've owned this lens a few years now and every time I attach it to my D300 I remember how great it is. Compared to the boring variable max aperture kit zooms, this lens has fantastic contrast, great (if slightly sluggish) auto focus and of course that super fast f/1.4 maximum aperture.

This lens is excellent for portraits on my (DX) D300 and can be used as a walkaround lens (especially for evening/low light use), although it's a little too long to take as the only lens on a holiday. For general use like travel I would always take the 35mm f/1.8, a 16-85mm, or the far heavier 17-55mm.

The build of this lens is very good, as good as any other primes I have used. The focus ring has a lovely smooth action and the body looks as good as new on my lens after two years of fairly regular use.

When using the lens at apertures below f/2 I find it to be a bit soft, but also you do have to be very accurate with focus at those shallow depth of fields. If you lean even very slightly forward or back after locking focus you will lose your focus point.

Overall, for the money, you can't go wrong. If you only get one DX prime it should probably be the 35mm f/1.8. For FX users and DX users getting a few primes for different uses however, this lens is almost essential. Remember - to pick up a modern (AF-S) Nikon f/1.4 lens at any other focal length costs well over £1000!!
