This has been the professional portrait lens for years. There is a new G version which is also a 1.4 which has some newer coatings and an AF motor buit in; however you simply cannot go wrong with this lens.

The bokeh it produces is second to none, it is made without compromise to be a portrait lens. It is designed from the ground up as a portrait lens to give you memories that will last a lifetime.

It is quite beautiful wide open at 1.4 with beautiful bokeh. It is totally stellar by F2 and bitingly sharp sharp (almost too sharp by 2.8). The front element on this lens is huge; it is a beautiful low light prime.

AF performance is fast, I'd go as far to say even slightly faster than the new G version. If you have a pro body the motor will focus this baby very well indeed.

If you can afford it, it will last you many years.

It is my favorite lens.
It is not much faster than 85/1.8, and it is actually slower focusing (and mine needs "-13" micro-compensation), still for it's purpose it is a true gem.
Bokeh is outstanding (wide open and probably even more so @ f/2-2.2), and the combination of excellent central sharpness, vignetting and lack of sharpness in the corners actually saves you post-processing.
If the AF problem gets more severe, I will just have it fixed and go on using it till one of us passes away. And, unless something happens to it, I guess that won't be 85mm f/1.4.

Simply stunning! Fast focusing, sharp images, great bokeh, excellent low light performance, beautifully built, half the price of the Canon f1.2 85mm (also fabulous, shallower depth of field but painfully slow AF). This Nikon Nikkor 85mm is a virtually flawless lens. I wish they made an equivalent 50mm. I'm tempted to buy the 105 and 135 mm versions with the background 'defocus' feature! Buy this before it's permanently replaced by newer cheaper technology. JP.
