I bought this to protect an expensive lens. It's really rather simple. You screw it on and forget about it. It doesn't effect either the picture quality or the look/feel of the lens as it's got such a slim profile.
I wouldn't use any lens without such a simple barrier of protection over the end. It's not going to stop a bullet, but a simple chip or an inadvertent scratch from a set of keys could break the bank if you're not using some kind of protection.
Bottom line, if you're going to spend hundreds if not thousands on a lens, do yourself a favour and get a filter. If not to play around with effects, then just as protection.

Bought this filter for my brand new 50mm f1.4G lens as a protection and so far so good! I keep it on the lens all the time. It seems to be much better quality than some other cheaper ones.

Yeah, it was a little more expensive than some of the other options... But I'm putting it on a $500 lens. I want the pictorial results to be as good as the lens is expensive. It makes sense to put the best protection on the lens.

Outstanding Nikon clear 58mm lens. Filter was clean, no finger prints or smudges. Came with a plastic filter lens case to store when not needed for certain types of photography pictures. Nikon that about said it all.
