I have been a wildlife photographer for over 20 years and this optic has to owned if you are serious about photographing natural history. The build structure is solid as a rock.It is the macro version of the old Nikkor 300mm f2.8 AIS in terms of build.It is meant to last for years. The optics are jaw dropping ie sharpness,colour rendition and zero distortion. I have had the newer 105mm VR AFS but traded it in for this lens. I have heard stories that the 105mm's VR is vunerable to malfuction if it is received a knock. The 200mm has less of an emphasis on packing it full of electronics. A good analogy is that the 105mm is like sparkling wine but the 200mm is like champagne!!!

This is cracker. It is very sharp. It shows fantastic detail at the macro/micro level and it's great as a 200mm telephoto lens.
Don't expect it to focus fast, so it's no use for action photography, but even used as a standard lens it gives beautiful, rich images.
It's also compact and light weight. I love experimenting with this lens.
For macro work you'll want to use a flash unless it's a bright sunny day :o).

I can find no fault with this lens. It's a little heavy but I don't know how you could construct it otherwise. I'll let others discuss the technical details as to focus and the like; I find it produces wonderful colors and is great for insects. It may take a little work to understand the depth of field sufficiently to be able to take quick images of bugs.
