Wide, wide, wide. 20 Nov 2010
Well, I have the 10.5mm DX fisheye for my D300 and use it quite a lot, so when I moved to full frame I just had to have the full frame equivalent. When I first opened the box I was surprised that for its age the 16mm lens was plastic (the research I had done did not point to this), I must say that the 10.5mm feels better in the hand. The lens itself gives a great perspective but being a fisheye it is only useful in certain situations. The 16mm focuses as close as 25cm to get those in your face fisheye perspectives, but again the 10.5mm trumps this lens with a 14cm close focus range giving a more pronounced fisheye perspective. Do not buy the 16mm fisheye for DX cameras, this is for FX only, likewise the 10.5mm fisheye is for DX only. I suppose if I had not been shooting the 10.5mm fisheye on a DX body then I would probably be totally happy (5 stars) with the 16mm fisheye, and although I think the 16mm takes a good picture and does its job well, I prefer the more pronounced perspective of the 10.5mm fisheye. All the above said, I think it was worth the money just for the fun views this lens can produce.

As an (obvious) after thought, if you are thinking of purchasing this lens I would not expect great corner to corner sharpness with this lens, its a fisheye it's supposed to distort. Also this lens has great depth of field even at f/2.8. I think this lens gives the best results at f/5.6 or f/8, this does not matter since you only need 1/15th to 1/20th of a second shutter speed to get sharp shots with this lens.

My original Nikon full-frame fisheye was a MF f3.5 version that I lost whilst shooting in a waist-high meadow full of natural grass. I used it on my film SLR (F100). The insurance company's replacement was this one, that I now use on my D700.

I still would , now, have preferred to have my older, slower and bought secondhand original Nikkor. Optically, this is fine though comparisons with other lens are impossible as there's only two available and one simply shouldn't need to buy a fisheye lens again.

It does have excellent multicoating, essential for coping with a bright sun that's nearly always in the frame. A fireball of sun in one corner doesn't result in a string of coloured globules raking across the frame. Centre sharpness is excellent, with the edges and corners are good and OK respectively. Colours and contrast are bright and punchy.

The plastic lens casing is marked as recyclable - don't get me wrong, I'm not against the environment but the casing does seem, certainly next to traditional Nikon values as though it won't last long. I dropped this lens onto a concrete floor from only a couple of feet, which dented the shallow hood and fractured some of that plastic casing, but it still works fine, so the basics are durable. A warning there; it's so small it can easily slip though cold, especially gloved, fingers.

In urban landscapes everyday images can be transformed into a breathtaking and winning image. Environmental portraits showing the subject's surroundings around them can be an inspired alternative. Use care, however, as close-ups with this lens can cause enemies. Pop and rock bands, with their lust for 'awesome' images of themselves love me using this lens occasionally, either at gigs or on a shoot. More traditional photographers, however, often see it as gimmicky, though.

Instinct might tell me to go for the Sigma, had I not got this one. Optically, I'd stay with this but for once, I'd say that the Sigma might be better built. I haven't handled or used their's, so don't take my word for it. Maybe, my dropping the lens and subsequent damage blinkers me somewhat.

A very capable lens 20 Jan 2012

Having read some posts about this fisheye lens I dont think some people buying it actually know how the images will look after they are taken. To get the most from this particular lens you need a full frame D3 (I use D3s and D3X) and DXO Optics Pro 6 or 7 software which can readjust the shape into something more useful. The software isn't free, but it is well worth the investment as it turns this 'novelty' infrequently used 16mm into something really useful for a variety of shots.

It is a moderately well built Nikon Lens at a good price, with very good optics. the edges can be a little soft, but this is expected. Just don't shoot at f2.8. I find f8 to give the best results.

Worth the money, especially as Amazon were offering it at under £600 for a while.
