Great piece of hardware, 29 April 2004

(dropped a star for the god-awful software)
.
The Nike MP3 Player is incredibly good value for money. The sound qualityis great and the device has 4 or 5 pre set equaliser settings (rock/techno/ classical etc)plus the facility to customise. But its so small!!My other worry was that it might be very loud, but its certainly plentyloud enough, even when worn running into wind.. I was initially worriedabout chafe from the arm band, but after running with it on for over anhour I nearly forgot it was there. Its incredibly light.
.
Now for the negatives. Although the hardware itself is just perfect forthe price (I for one never run for more than 4 hours, so more memory isn'tan issue for me), the huge drawback here is the software which comes withthe player. 'Music Match' is the most awkward, un-intuitive, random half-baked package I've ever come across. Its incredibly slow to copy from CD,it won't import from 'portable device', the display icons make you closedown the whole programme instead of one window, no matter how many timesyou type in the artists name it always says 'artist' and the list goes on.Bizarrely, if you take one oe two tracks from a cd, next time you put thatcd in Music Match doesn't acknowledge you have a cd in at all (no tracklistings appear, track numbers or anything) but it WILL play the cd!Absolutely awful. And to round it all off, half the functions aren'tavailable until you download (and pay for, presumably) the upgrade fromthe internet.
.
I imagine this is one reason why the Nike MP3 player is so cheap- thecheap software. If this is the case I don't mind. Even good old WMA filescan be played (but not Sony Sound Stage Audio's), so its an easy fix- binthe Music Match CD.
Once you've done that, you have a nigh on perfect product.

Nike and Phillips got it just right!, 9 Feb 2004
This review is from: Nike ACT211 128MB MP3 Player (Electronics)
This was the first Mp3 player i have bought and it is one of the best i have ever seen. It is superbly well made and it is this ergonomic design that offsets its simplicity.
Ok, it can't use folder systems, repeat or program songs or format them in any way while on the player, but this mp3 player does exactly what it set out to, it can cope with any physical exercise routine flawlessly, its easy to use andthe recharchable battery (included with charger) lasts for a good amount of time. All in all:
Pros.
Robust
Looks good
easy to use
great headphones (even if others say otherwise!)
arm and waist band work well
Cons.
Does not use folders
cannot program tracks
Buy it!!!

Excellent for use in the gym & beyond, 17 Jan 2004

This really is a great piece of kit. As a regular in the gym I got fed up with skipping cds and minidisc players.
I can't complain about this piece of kit. No matter what I'm working on it keeps playing and the rechargeable batteries (supplied with the device) really do last as long as advertised.
Excellent!
