Astronomy Now, May 2007

'The enthusiasm and knowledge of the author is apparent as he
gives sensible and thorough advice... It is among the best introductions to
amateur astronomy I have seen and the book that I wish someone had given me
when I started skywatching.'

Review

'Well deserving of its fine reputation as an internationally respected reference guide.' The Good Book Guide (October 2006) 'The enthusiasm and knowledge of the author is apparent as he gives sensible and thorough advice... It is among the best introductions to amateur astronomy I have seen and the book that I wish someone had given me when I started skywatching.' Astronomy Now (May 2007) 'Patrick Moore's irrepressible personality comes through strongly in this delightful little book. It's filled with quirky anecdotes and wry observations that made me chuckle on several occasions.' Astronomy Now 'This book covers almost everything you need to know about the observable Universe... Thoroughly enjoyable.' Sky At Night (May 2007) 'One of the best handbooks for the wannabe astonomer.' The Times (June 2007)

Best beginners book 10 Mar 2007
By Eur0p1
Format:Hardcover
Interested in astronomy? Thinking of buying a telescope? Please buy this book first. It will tell you everything you need to know about the different types of telescopes and all the different accessories including eyepieces and mounts. It is very easy to waste your money buying the wrong type. This book is one of the most comprehensive guides available. In my opinion it is THE guide. As well as being an equipment guide is also an excellent introduction to actual observing.
After you buy your telescope have a look at Turn Left at Orion.
These two books are the ones recommended most often to beginners on astronomy forums.

"Nightwatch: A Practical Guide to Viewing the Universe" is an excellent accompaniment to complement to Terence Dickinson's other book (co-authored with Alan Dyer) on popular astronomy, "The Backyard Astronomer's Guide". "Nightwatch" concentrates more on observing techniques, and includes useful charts covering both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. I particularly like Dickinson's annotated star charts which show at a glance the most interesting celestial objects within a given constellation with useful data and personalized comments. The general level of discussion and easy narrative style is aimed at the practising amateur astronomer, and the high quality paper in a spiral bound hard-cover book format makes it very convenient for use whilst observing outside. The thirteen chapters cover an amazing spread of topics, from the large-scale structure of the Cosmos, through deep-sky objects, the Planets, Sun and Moon, to comets, meteors and auroras. For completeness, a chapter is dedicated to stargazing equipment, but this is covered in much more detail in the Backyard Astronomer's Guide. Overall, the book is to be highly recommended for both novice and experienced astronomers alike.

I have had this book for some 3 weeks now. I am still find it amazing. I first came across this book when on holiday in Oz. A receptionist had it on display, amongst other stargazing books. She did demonstrations for hotel visitors and gave a fasinating talk, and view through a telescope of the stars. I am thinking of buying another one, for my mother. The book is well written and not much maths in it, (thank goodness). It is very easy to understand and, at the same time, causes your brain to 'stretch' as you try to conceptualise the vastness of it all. Brilliant.
