Product Description

Product Description

January 1304 and Hugh Corbett, devoted emissary of King Edward I, has been charged with yet another dangerous mission.
Scrope, an unscrupulous manor lord, has reneged on his promise to hand over a priceless ornate cross he stole from the Templars during the Crusades. Furthermore, he has massacred as heretics fourteen members of a religious order, whose corpses now hang in the woods near Mistleham in Essex.
The King, determined to restore order, sends Corbett to Mistleham in his stead. But as Corbett reaches the troubled village, it becomes obvious that the situation has worsened. A mysterious bowman has appeared, killing townspeople at random. Is one of the Brethren responsible, or have the Templars arrived to wreak revenge? Can Corbett restore Mistleham to peace, and return the treasure to the King, before further blood is shed?

Sir Hugh is back! What good news and he is back in a gripping mystery, another page turner of first order.

This is actaully No. 16 of the Sir Hugh Corbett series. Set at the time of King Edward I Sir Hugh is the King's trusted problem-solver. And again he is send on a royal mission. I have read them all and all are just fantastic read. But you do not have to read first all the previous story - even tough I can recommend this - to understand this mystery story.

Paul Doherty is a historian and that shows. For this very mystery he uses previous work (The Great Crown Jewels Robbery of 1303) or going works (The Templar (first part)). He has just a feeling to re-create the medieval times for the reader. It does not seem to be a far off time, but an actual and gripping one.

But not only the medieval age is re-created, but a gripping story is told. Doherty is just superb here. I found it amazing how the blast of a horn, indicating approaching death, can make you shiver. Here the sins of the past are catching up.

Enjoy this new mystery by Doherty. It is "top notch"!!

I enjoyed this book very much but could not quite award a five, as the narrative didn't flow for me as well as I'd like. This made it a tricky read at times. I will continue to select further titles within this series and try some of the others too. The 'bandwagon' within this genre continues to try and outdo authors such as Sharon Penman and has given those who were stuck in the twilight zone a new lease of life. Paul Doherty is a prolific writer and this could be his achilles heel - attention to the way he puts the words on the page would have made this book a more comfortable read. That said, the book was hard to put down and read from cover to cover in no time.
