Product Description

MOJO, (Chris Ingham), November 2011

(4 stars) Displays Mendoza's wondrous gift as a cinematic jazz composer and orchestrator of colour and nuance.

CD Description

Acclaimed arranger-conductor and 6-times Grammy winner Vince Mendoza assembles an all-star cast for 'Nights on Earth' his first album of originals in 13 years! The album features John Scofield, John Abercrombie, Joe Lovano, Bob Mintzer, Larry Goldings, Kenny Werner and Christian McBride, plus others. After a remarkably productive decade which saw him writing stellar orchestral arrangements for recordings by Bjork, Melody Gardot, Sting and Joni Mitchell (he won Grammy Awards for his contributions to her 'Both Sides Now' in 2000 and 'Travelogue' in 2003), Vince Mendoza has shifted focus back to his own compositions for the first time in 13 years. On this eagerly-awaited follow up to 'Epiphany', Mendoza recruited an all-star cast of long time collaborators like guitarists John Abercrombie, John Scofield and Nguyen Le, drummer Peter Erskine, percussionist Luis Conte, organist Larry Goldings, steel drummer Andy Narell, pianists Kenny Werner and Alan Pasqua, plus saxophonists Bob Mintzer and Joe Lovano. He is also joined by such new friends as Brazilian vocalist Luciana Souza, Malian kora player and singer Tom Diakite, young American jazz stars in bassist Christian McBride, drummer Greg Hutchinson and trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire. Along with members of the Metropole Orkest, the Dutch ensemble that Mendoza has presided over as chief conductor for the past six years, they bring to life these evocative pieces that flow directly from the composer's heart to his pen. His most personal and compelling project to date, 'Nights on Earth' is yet another crowning achievement in the career of the acclaimed composer-arranger-conductor.

If you're familiar with Vince's work you probably don't need to read this ! ... however if you seek something that isn't mainstream (which it definitely isn't ) then buy this album without hesitation . This man's work is so well crafted and imaginative that it always manages to leave me with a total sense of fulfilment and well - being , a skill that not many possess . Although principally in the jazz idiom , it is by no means limited to the genre , encompassing so many different styles that it never fails to bring a smile of satisfaction to my face ! . Buy this album if you are fortunate enough to have the even the slightest hint of musical appreciation - and if you like it , then buy as much of this guy's material as you can ( if available !! ), you will not be disappointed ! Sheer musical genius !!!!!

Why Would I Myself Bother Here? 23 Nov 2011

My guess is I was one of the few who noticed and bought a copy of Epiphany back in 1999. Why in my case? I kept noticing who wrote some of the better tunes on several of the jazz CDs I was buying. Epiphany is still one of my best treasures.

And now the same for Nights On Earth. "A List" musicians doing their best performing Mendoza's compositions. There is no detail that is less than perfect and everyone involved here delivered his full potential. This is where jazz, world and classical orchestra cross swords and the resulting body of work is more than the sum of its parts.

Does anyone remember the parable about a group of blind men who get to walk up to, feel and describe the respective part of the elephant they each get to experience? You can find the two tracks available via NPR. You get to experience two very different parts of the elephant. You'll like those parts but you'll be a long way from being able to describe the whole elephant.

There is a lot of good stuff out there but this is exceptionally better. Sorry for the rave here but it's worth any personal embarrassment on my part. This is 5 stars in a world where 3 is really good.

Excellent, Engaging, even Masterful at times 9 Dec 2011

Mendoza brings a wealth of experience from his background in music arrangements. His own work shines here, and the guest artists are a treat.

Nice mix of straightforward jazz, smooth jazz, world, and even classical. It is all very beautifully melodic as little elements are played and reworked throughout. He ties it all together nicely; so listening from beginning to end is a wonderful trip through the genius of this arranger/artist and the amazing collaborators.

It is both contemporary and timeless. Definitely going on my favorites playlist.
