Book Description

1 Jun 2006

Two fragile people. One desperate second chance.

Reeling and desolate, Adrienne Willis needs space to rethink her life after her husband leaves her for a younger woman. Fleeing everything, she jumps at the chance to look after her friend's guesthouse in the coastal town of Rodanthe, North Carolina. But there is a storm heading for Adrienne, in more ways than she can imagine.

Stranded and isolated as the weather closes in, Adrienne has only one guest: Paul Flanner, a man running from his own shattered past. Taking refuge, Paul and Adrienne have only each other to turn to. Against all the odds, their one weekend sets in motion feelings that will resonate through the rest of their lives.

Three years earlier, on a warm November morning in 1999, Adrienne Willis had returned to the Inn and at first glance had thought it unchanged, as if the small Inn were impervious to sun and sand and salted mist. Read the first page

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Important 24 July 2007
It was not difficult to guess how this book would end. Very early it became clear, and for a moment I wondered about the point of reading it all, since I knew the ending anyway. But luckily, something pulled. I continued reading every word and got deeply touched by this beautiful, yet realistic, story about true love. The joy when it happens and - as the book says - the tragedy when it ends. The greater the love, the worse the tragedy.

It's an amazing story. A story about how four days can change three people's lives. Adrienne, Paul and Paul's son Mark.

This is not a book to hurry through, in spite of the page-turning quality. It's a book for afterthought. A book to devour. A book which makes you stop and reflect on what is important in life, in people. To search under the surface. To question racing through life in order to obtain success, money, fame. Never enough. Never too fast. Blind to what really matters.

Life is short. The saying "it's never too late" is not true. Sometimes it IS too late. Finding happiness is precious. However long it lasts, it's important and its aftermath may change a life forever.

Nicholas Sparks does not only write for romantics. "Nights in Rodanthe" is a realistic story. Tenderly told and with much insight into the human mind and heart.

We are not so different after all. We all want peace of mind, love, security, happiness.

As the author well knows.

4.0 out of 5 stars Surreal plot but still awesome! 9 Feb 2004
It seems almost impossible that a man can fall in love so deeply with a woman he had known withnin a week.Although the plot isn't very strong,Sparks writing's very smooth and thus the story is tender and poignant. This is a very touching story and it has also imparted some values to me.....I highly recommend this book!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book I have read...since.....his last book! 23 Sep 2002
If you are a fan of Nicholas Sparks, do not hesitate to buy this book. It is as well written as all of his other novels. I do not want to ruin the story by summing it all up here, but lets just say that you can expect to smile, cry and reflect on your own life. All of his story's can be related to by most people. He writes with such emotion and vivid explanations (it is like your watching a movie in your mind). I am sure this book will not disappoint any if his fans!!!!Good book to read also if you would like to be introduced to Nicholas Sparks' novels. I also highly recommend Message in a Bottle and The Rescue.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sparks of Passion 1 Mar 2009
By Alessi Lover TOP 500 REVIEWER
A lovely tale of romance and love, written by such a talented author Nicholas Sparks.

It tells the tale of how a middle aged lady finds love again and in an unexpected way, she recounts the tale (maybe the greatest love affair in her life) to her daughter some years later. Letters from the past are kept and an almost fairy tale romance follows.

The warmth and passion that come out of this book by the author cann't but help be felt when you read it. Not such some soapy romance but something with a deeper and caring feeling to it, especially when you find out what happens at the end.

A brilliant book to curl up with full of emotion, tears and that never ending feeling of what will the outcome be. You might just guess what happens before the final chapters, but even if you do I am sure you will not be disappointed with the story.

One for taking away on holiday, a good old fashioned romance.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well written 7 Oct 2007
Sparks is a very good writter. And this book is well written and short. But so far it has been my least favorite of all his books. With this, his latest love story, he tells us the story of two shattered people. Both sadly scarred by past experiences. Who find each other late in life and realize they are soul mates.

The story takes place in a small coastal town of Rodanthe, North Carolina where Adrienne Willis is tending to a friends Inn as she re-thinks her life. Her husband had left her three years earlier for a younger woman. And the Inn's only guest, Paul Flanner who has just sold his medical practice and has come to Rodanthe to escape his own shattered past.

This meeting of the two takes place within the midst of major storm. Which brings these two people closer toegther. And we share their weekend together. A weekend that will change them. As well as affect the rest of their lives.

5.0 out of 5 stars I LoVe iT!!! 27 Aug 2008
Mr Sparks never seems to fail to pull at those heart strings and this book is no exception.
I thought this book was lovely and cosy with not too many characters and it seemed to get straight to the point of the story and I didn't expect the ending which as usual with all his books had me reaching for the tissues.
This is a book that I could read over and over and not tire of and the only problem I found is that "IT'S NOT LONG ENOUGH"

1.0 out of 5 stars Utter tosh 24 Mar 2009

Plot spoiler ahead ...
How this ever got published, let alone made into a film, I'll never know. It's only 214 pages long and took a day to read, yet I feel that I've been cheated out of the time I wasted on it. Just possibly, if the writing was more consummate and engaging I might have believed that a man and a woman were capable of falling head over heels in love over a couple of days. As it is, it simply didn't ring true. The dialogue was simplistic, the characters not deep or complex enough (nor the details of their `relationship' well draw enough) for the reader to believe (or understand) why or how they fell in love. There was lots of `telling' and very little `showing'. Moreover, for this love to have endured for 14 years, despite the fact that Adrienne never saw Paul again, is really stretching the boundaries of imagination. That said, this is a character who, illogically, went out to buy ice and a cool box to preserve cold food in case the power cut off during a storm, yet transferred said food into the box immediately. Most sensible people would have frozen the ice, left the food in the fridge and waited to see if the power went out (after all, there ain't no power in a cool box). So, this ridiculously unbelievable and idiotic action actually makes a three day romance of a lifetime seem believable in comparison. Far too trite to be poignant - I've honestly read better Mills & Boon.
