I really love Ella Fitzgerald, but the artist who is in a studio... controlled, polished, produced and not apt to go into scat-frenzies at the drop of a hat.
So, I adore the songbooks and the early stuff from the 30s and 40s, but some of the concerts turn me off. Her 'ooobly-doobly' stuff gets real old if one is not there, seeing it. I saw her performing in the 70s and loved every 'oobly.' when I was in the fifth row, watching her, first hand. But, on an album, it all just seems like unending irritation. Every other number seems to be some new aberration of a standard. Yes, I know... that's jazz, it just seems so excessive to be forced to wallow in it, with no let-up.
This collection is much more balanced. She still crucifies some standards, but a lot of it is truly wonderful. It is one of the very best of the concert albums, and it's new, unavailable for fifty years; so, it can't be ignored.
