Antoinette Petruscu, pretty, blonde and in her 20s is a Venator (a kind of bounty hunter), paid to take down rogue paranormals including crazed, vampire-type creatures called Necrodreniacs. Antoinette is very, very good at her job. But then she has reason to be. Having witnessed her mother's brutal murder when she was a small child, Antoinette's hatred for all things remotely vampiric - including the members of the Aeturnus (vampires who have chosen a controlled existence, receiving blood from willing donors) is deep-seated. So it's less-than-welcome when she's asked to work together with her one-time saviour, the compellingly attractive Aeturnus Christian Laroque.
As another reviewer has commented, I came across this book via Amazon's recommendations lists. I wasn't quite as favourably impressed as others have been. In addition to the damp squib of an ending, and the dubious quality of the relationship between the male and female leads, I really struggled with the author's characterisation of the heroine. With the exception of her youthful traumatic encounter, Antoinette seems to be practically perfect at everything she does. She's pretty - and seems to remain so during battles! - youthful, and not only a successful Venator but apparently THE most successful (for her age) with over 140 Necrodeniac kills to her name, and the record for the best ever results obtained out of the Venator training academy. In the end, I was struggling to contain a snort every time a new item was added to Antoinette's catalogue of abilities. As UF heroines go, Antoinette is no match for the likes of Cat Crawford, Mercy Thompson, or Kate Daniels - she simply isn't well-rounded enough.
Overall, this was not a bad read. But it wasn't exactly great either - and there are so many excellent urban fantasy series available, I don't think I'll be bothering with the follow-up.
