This 3 part series was originally telecast on the TNT cable network - based on the memoir book by William L. Shirer, an American journalist.

The Shirer's arrive in Germany in the 1930's just as the Third Reich begins to get nazified. This story is interesting due to the many historical figures the Shirer's meet, not at least Putzi Hanfstaengl, first close friend and then sworn enemy of Hitler (after escaping to the US).

Sam Waterston (of Law and Order) stars as American news correspondent William L. Shirer - occasionally overhamming his part but in general delivering a pretty good picture. Marthe Keller plays his wife Tess.

Annoyingly the production didn't seem to have had enough money to hire different actors for crowd scenes, so it is that you see the same faces in different guises trotting through the movie. As historical yearn though, unbeatable.

Courage beyond belief 11 Sep 2007
If you didn't know this story was true, you would never believe it!

The courage, integrity and determination of newspaper correspondent Bill Shirer and his Austrian wife, Tess, as they faced the growing antisemitism and tyranny of the Nazi regime in 1930s Germany, are an inspiration for us lesser mortals.

Shirer faced increasing hostility from the Nazi propaganda machine as he strove to produce truthful reports for his American newpaper, and was eventually dismissed for refusing to compromise by a US media community in denial. Yet miraculously an opening for his message appeared in the new field of live radio, through which Shirer was able to reach an even greater audience than before.

He and Tess hid a Jewish family in their flat and managed to get them safely out of Berlin. They themselves finally had to flee Germany separately, Shirer eventually joining his wife in Portugal. Shirer escaped only seconds ahead of a Gestapo raid on his rented flat. He smuggled out his war memoirs in a trunk which he sent ahead via Gestapo headquarters!

You'll be on the edge of your seat throughout at the audacity and tenacity of this man, and will be challenged by his amazing courage. The insights it gives into a society descending into madness are spellbinding, and his books and war diaries are regarded as a foremost source document for the Third Reich.

It really is better than most fictional thrillers. Watch it; buy it; lend it to your friends!

By Geoff
This mini series about an American Journalist in Berlin, during the rise of Hitler, has you rivited to your seat. It is a true story and just shows how the West were ignorant of what was actually going on in Germany, under Hitler. The German propagander establishment under the charge of Gobels, dictated what foreign journalist's were allowed to write about the Nazi Regime. This four disc set is well worth buying and it is one of those films you can watch over and over again when the mood takes you. The only gripe I have, is the rather long uneccessary introduction to each part, which you have to sit through. Put the kettle on and make a cup of tea, and you will just be in time to watch the start of the episode. Why these repetitive long introductions have to be put into each episode always spoils a good film. Once at the start of Episode one, would have been quite sufficient. This film comes in about six different languages and you can choose to have subtitles on or off.
