Book Description

In searching for a friend's remote cabin in the Oregon woods, Tess Dunlap gets hopelessly lost. She stops at another cabin to ask for directions and steps into a living nightmare. The crazy man who lives there believes God sent Tess to him to be his wife, and he won't let her leave. He forces her to watch violent movies with him and then emulates what he sees on the screen.

When the battered and bruised woman escapes and finds her way to John Paul Thornton’s cabin, he risks his life to get her to safety. He's compassionate and funny and quickly becomes a good friend, the one person Tess feels she can rely on. Until she discovers what he does for a living.

John has some serious issues of his own to confront, but there's a more urgent problem to deal with first. The crazy man hasn't given up. He's coming after Tess.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nightmare In The Woods 8 July 2012
By Mags
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I enjoyed this book, I found the characters (apart for the villain) likeable, and the storyline very good. There was certainly plenty of excitement. Very good writing too.

I did find bits a little overly wordy though, and containing too many detail that I felt added little or nothing to the story or plot.

Overall, I'd say Nightmare In The Woods is a good read and award it 4 stars.

3.0 out of 5 stars 3.5 Would have Rated it Higher if Romance was More Believable 26 July 2012

Nightmare in the Woods was suspenseful with an equal focus on romance. Tess, suffering at the hands of a madman (Larry), barely escapes to a cabin in the woods where she meets John. Once John understands the situation he takes it upon himself to protect Tess while aiding the police in Larry's capture. Meanwhile John and Tess fall in love.

I liked Tess and John- despite Tess's horrible experience the author made her both fragile and strong. Never whiny or too much like the "damsel in distress". John was a take charge kind of guy in some aspects of his life but nice. I liked that they matured as individuals throughout the story; made me really want to root for the two of them.

However... based on how evil and vile the villain Tess was tortured for over a week... and the fact that Larry was forever on the hunt to track Tess down and make her pay for leaving him, I found it a bit far-fetched that the romance would happen so quickly. The progression from protector to lover was within a week or two of meeting. Not even 40% into the book and they were already talking about love. I also found it a little too pat how Tess just fit right into John's world and that there was only one snafu to the perfect relationship (I won't spoil it).

If one were to take Larry out of the plot there would be no meat to the story at all. A little better than okay, so 3.5 stars for me. I would read another of Fineman's work.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good story, both predictable and surprising 4 July 2013
By Kim F. - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
First the good news: this is a well-written book despite being formulaic and a bit predictable. The main characters are likeable and grow during the book's progression, which is something I like to see.

Now the bad news: there is more violence, especially sick/twisted violence, than I usually care for. I almost stopped reading several times due to the villain and some of the things he does. The author compensates a bit for this by preaching the cost of gratuitous violence in movies and media - despite her book actually fitting the description.

Overall, it is a good book, but the violence was definitely off-putting.

3.0 out of 5 stars OK if you're more into a love story 14 Sept. 2013
By Donna Headlee - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I got really bored with this book. It had way over the top characters who had perfect lives. The story line ended up to be too much about the romance between the main characters than the heroine's actual "nightmare in the woods." It would have been more interesting if it would have centered more around her ordeal and escape than this nut doing all kinds of stupid things to try to capture her again. It was "ok" but very disappointing to me. Very little suspense. Good if you like a love story where everyone ends up happily ever after.

4.0 out of 5 stars don't read alone at night! 11 July 2012

This book is a departure from the others I've read by this author. The villain isn't just a bad guy, he's a twisted sicko. The scenes with him are chilling, to say the least! The book is definitely more of a thriller than romantic suspense.

That said, I like the natural flow of the romantic elements, not the typical boy meets, boy loses romance. Two people thrown together in a nightmare who become attracted along the way. I also enjoyed the secondary characters, as usual for a Fineman book!

If you enjoy page-turning excitement with romance, and can handle some twisted violence, you'll enjoy this book as much as any other Sue Fineman book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nightmare in the Woods by Sue Fineman 6 Jun. 2012
By Erin - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
Sue Fineman has a skill for creating unique and engagingly gentle, almost totally romantic stories. Accept she somehow manages to lace the plot with some despicably violent villain and an obsession to destroy everything the protagonist desires or represents. I know that sounds scary and it is but with Sue Fineman steering the story it isn't. Well it is but it doesn't quite get there, ends up being exercise for the imagination.

Sue Fineman pens an interesting story, always a mystery but not quite a thriller, always romantic but never quite a romance and always family focused but not quite a saga.

Sue has a wonderful sense of timing something I find very engaging. She's a master storyteller. `Nightmare in the Woods' by Sue Fineman earns five stars from me.
