Product Description

Review

'Written with panache, and a fine ear for dialogue, Leather manages the collision between the real and the occult with exceptional skill, adding a superb time-shift twist at the end'.

(Daily Mail )

'This extraordinary thriller, like the others in this series, is very reminiscent of the novels of Dennis Wheatley . . . [the] completely unpredictable ending of this outstanding story was so incredibly imaginative, that I cannot wait to see how the next book in this series, by this very versatile and prolific author will be tackled.' (www.eurocrime.co.uk )

'A disturbing, blood-chilling read from a writer at the top of his game' ****

(Sunday Express on MIDNIGHT )

'Another great thriller from Stephen Leather but this time with a devilish twist!'

(James Herbert on NIGHTFALL )

'A wicked read'

(Anthony Horowitz on NIGHTFALL )

'Suffused with mysterious pentagrams, not to mention a creeping sense of evil, I suspect that down-to-earth Nightingale is a man we'll hear more of'

(Daily Mail on NIGHTFALL )

'Dark and exhilarating, you'd better keep the lights on when you're reading it'

(Candis on NIGHTFALL )

'The third book in a very interesting and engaging series. Stephen Leather has written many thrillers, all with that sense of engagement you get from writers who know what they are doing. A couple of them have been adapted for BBC-TV productions and this supernatural series reads like it could easily be on our screens in the near future. Read it now and beat the rush. Demonically good.' (The Courier Mail )

'If you love thrillers then this comes from one of the best, so good is the writing I felt quite intimidated about writing anything here, but I can without any reservation recommend not only NIGHTMARE but everything Stephen Leather has written - yes, he is that good.'

(Gothic Reign )

This is the third book in the Jack Nightingale series, a supernatural series exploring the afterlife, and communicating with the dead, notably Sophie, a young girl Nightingale was powerless to stop from dying when Nightingale was a cop. Truth be told this isn't my type of book but being a fan of Stephen Leather's other books I was interested to read it. I must also add that I had not read the first two in the series but despite this I was able to follow the characters which were already established pretty easily.

From the perspective of the genre - if you don't like supernatural stories then this isn't for you.

That aside, the book is well written, and I can see Nightingale having another ten books written about him and it's definitely a page turner. Somehow though, the character feels a bit predictable - a bit of a Nick Nolte-type good cop who drinks too much who's a good guy at heart and does what he has to do to get the job done.. a bit cliché I suppose. It's an easy quick read but I'm just used to a bit more from this author.

Nightmare... 17 Mar 2012
By Big Bertha TOP 100 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition
Being an fan of crime thrillers and having previously read all of Stephen Leathers 'Spider Shepherd' series I was initially unsure about reading this series due to the Supernatural theme. Reading Cursed: A Jack Nightingale Short Story as an intro to the series and Nightfall: The First Jack Nightingale Supernatural Thriller soon had me hooked.

In this the third in the Jack Nightingale series, ex Police Officer turned Private Eye Jack is still disturbed by the events that led to the death of a young girl Sophie in the first book and feels that she is trying to reach him from the other side.

It's not really necessary to read the books in the correct order as enough background and history is provided so that a new reader picking this up can follow the plot. That said I don't think the relationship between the characters can be fully realised without reading the full story.

I like Jack Nightingale as a character, he's not perfect by any means; he smokes too much, drinks too much and treats his loyal assistant Jenny appallingly but all of this makes him more realistic and likeable as a character. The relationship between Jack and Jenny is sparky and makes for entertaining reading.

The ending of the book wasn't what I was expecting but it certainly opens up all sorts of possibilities as to where the author is going to take this series next and I'll certainly be first in line for the next one.

SUSPENSE ALL THE WAY 21 Jan 2012
By COLSEE VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This was my first Stephen Leather book but won't be my last!

Thoroughly enjoyed this story. The lead character, Jack NIghtingale, a private detective and his assistant Jennny
come up against some rather satanic people and situations.
Not an 'in your face' devil worship story but one that keeps you gripped as opposed to shaking in your boots.
NIghtingale is 'contacted' by a young child who threw herself off a balcony while he was trying to talk her down.
The trouble is she is contacting him through a gangster who has been shot in the head and is lying in hospital brain dead.

What then ensues is a journey that pulls him into contact with the occult. Having recently found out his biological father, who left him a mansion in his will, was a famous occultist he is in prime position to meet all sorts of characters that you would rather avoid.

I won't put any spoilers in but well worth a read.
