This is a collections of short(ish) stories which were written by Asimov, mostly for magazines, between 1941 and 1967. Apparently he was sick of people telling him "Nightfall" was the best story he'd ever written & wanted to put it with other stories which were just as good! This book only has 5 stories (Nightfall, Green Patches, Hostess, Breeds There a Man...? and C-Chute) - novelettes rather than short stories. (Nightfall TWO has more, shorter, stories). And he's right - the others are just as good as Nightfall! They are a wide and varied selection - Nightfall itself is a psychological thriller set on another planet far away, and Breeds There a Man...? is set in the near future of Earth. All of the stories are well written, the characterisation is consistently good and sometimes great, and the plots are about as believable as sci-fi gets. Both this book and it's sequel are a great introduction to Asimov for someone who hasn't come across him before or a good reminder of his earlier work for those who have.
