Book Description

21 Jan 2010

'You're going to hell, Jack Nightingale': They are words that ended his career as a police negotiator. Now Jack's a struggling private detective - and the chilling words come back to haunt him.

Nightingale's life is turned upside down the day that he inherits a mansion with a priceless library; it comes from a man who claims to be his father, and it comes with a warning. That Nightingale's soul was sold at birth and a devil will come to claim it on his thirty-third birthday - just three weeks away.

Jack doesn't believe in Hell, probably doesn't believe in Heaven either. But when people close to him start to die horribly, he is led to the inescapable conclusion that real evil may be at work. And that if he doesn't find a way out he'll be damned in hell for eternity.

3.0 out of 5 stars Different Leather in need of originality 2 Mar 2010
By J. Potter TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Stephen Leather has forged a considerable reputation over the last two decades as someone that writes cleverly plotted thrillers. These most recently have featured ex-sas soldiers and undercover policemen. So it might be a surprise to his loyal fans to find this latest book is about a man that discovers his soul has been sold to the devil.

Jack Nightingale was a police negotiator, after an apparent suicide where Jack is implicated as a possible suspect he is forced to resign from the force and become a Private Investigator. Then he discovers he has inherited a large mansion, a fortune in books and that his soul was sold to the devil the day he was born. The devil will collect on his thirty third birthday, three weeks away. Jack is a man that has no belief in gods or devils, finding the whole premise implausible he sets out to discover the truth.

My thoughts on the book as a whole are mixed. There are great characters but I can't help feeling an opportunity has been missed. If you have watched any of the horror movies of the 1970's and 80's this book will often feel like a rerun. There is almost nothing here that is original to the genre. In fact for the first 300 pages it reminded me a great deal of James Herbert mixed with the Omen movies. There was not even any attempt to make a countdown or drama of the final three weeks. One minute it's three weeks and then with barely a waft of suspense and almost a book later we are suddenly down to a few days. It might be Stephen Leather is trying to branch out to a new younger audience and no longer needs forty something duffers with higher expectations.

4.0 out of 5 stars when you do not know who you are anymore... 1 Mar 2013
By Frenchie TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I have enjoyed reading the first of Jack Nightingale but it may because I quite like all things ''New Age''. It is not normally the kind of books I would read but I got into it fairly quickly. But for me, the real story is not the supernatural side, that was a bit spooky at times, it is the story of Jack Nightingale. One day, Jack learns that the life he knew, the parents he knew, his past was a lie. He was adopted at birth and was never told until he finds himself the sole beneficiary of his biological father. A father he never knew about, a father who sold his unborn child's soul to a devil in order to gain riches and ladies. And that was Jack's tragedy.
If you do not believe in the supernatural, or even acknowledge it, then I can understand that this book is not a good read for some and can seem over the top.
But if you do believe there is something somewhere, and you have an open mind, and you put yourself in Jack's shoes, then it is an enjoyable read. Do not dwell too much on the supernatural but dwell on how Jack is angry about his biological father and also about the people he still call his parents, his real parents but who lied to him by omission. It is a confusing state of mind.

5.0 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK COULD MAKE YOU LOSE WEIGHT ! 15 Aug 2014

this is the first book I have read by Stephen leather and I cant wait for the 2nd in this series to arrive.
well written with a great main character, it grabs you from the first sentence and doesn't let go until the last.
WARNING clear your diary, stock up on ready made meals, make sure you have nothing essential to do (it wouldn't get done anyway) and most importantly if your a smoker have a good supply as you will smoke more than normal due to the fact
jack nightingale lights up a lot (or maybe that was just me) if your trying to quit wait till your ready before you pick up this book.

I am a wiccan and I can tell you Stephen leather did his research and was spot on when it came to witches and good magik.

basically I couldn't put it down and certainly missed a few meals.

5.0 out of 5 stars a book full of twist and turns 21 Jan 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
This is the 1st book about Jack Nightingale so it best to read this one first as it tells you more about all the things leading up to his 33rd birthday plus the people he meets in the other books and about how Gosling sold Jack soul to the devil
It starts of with Jack still in the police and how Sophie Underwood dies and her father,
Jack becomes a PI and get a call from a solicitor about his fathers death, as it turns out that he was adopted at birth
Jack goes to the place and finds out that he has been left Gosling Manor along with a basement library full of books on black magic and loads of stuff to do with devils and witchcraft
he goes there later on with his mate Robbie who picks up a crystal ball and drops it,
Jack keeps seeing sign and hearing people say You're going to hell Jack Nightingale,
People around him are been found dead or are killing themselves
the book will have you hooked from the start
