You'll hear people talk about 'Doom Metal', and often you'll find Candlemass mentioned as a forerunner of that genre. Indeed, their debut LP, Epicus Doomicus Metallicus fits easily into the above classification. Nightfall does not. I'm 37, I was 23 when this was release and I thought I'd heard it all - Sabbath, Diamond Head, Manowar? - All great bands, but Nightfall changed all that. I sat open mouthed for the entirity of it's first play (which was vinyl in those days). Every track is an anthem, superbly played - Messiah Marcolin on his debut would never again sing so perfectly. The emotion in at least 3 of the songs had tears rolling down my cheeks. The shivers running up my spine were not repeated for many a year. Yeah, these days I've got different tastes, but I'll never forget how Nightfall made me feel, and its a record that stands the test of time - When I invested in CD some years later it was the first CD I bought. I don't think Candlemass ever managed to better this record. I bought a few releases after this one, but eventually gave them up as a lost cause. If you like Metal - Particularly the 'Heaviest Metal', then Nightfall should be in your collection.
