Product Description

Review

An intriguing examination of extreme psychological states. In the ruins of a shattered relationship, a young man struggles to understand how he lost the woman he loves. His story begins with a magical encounter: love at first sight. Soon, the couple move to London to build a charmed life together on the fringes of Wimbledon Common. Summer comes, and their domestic haven is transformed by the arrival of two gregarious neighbours; in the course of lazy days of sunshine and long, hedonistic nights, their households become one. But the intrusion of such strong personalities tests the lovers' faith in each other, and deep-rooted tensions are gradually revealed. Garner is insightful on the ways in which intimacy can give way to obsession.

The Times, January 29, 2003

'Garner writes of myth and landscape with lyricism and sensitivity...A promising and intriguing debut'

one to watch 28 Sep 2007
By Alix H
Format:Paperback
Garner's definitely a writer to look out for. Nightdancing is an ambitious blending of coming of age, magic realism, fairytale and London-fact. It has some fantastic poetic language, and strong images that linger - of people, conversations and places. The main character's well drawn, although the woman he loves is a bit too idealised for me. It's not the best book on the planet but it's a strong first novel that really reminds you of the invicibility of being 21, and is playing with some interesting ideas - including about what storytelling is. Look forward to the next one!

Strong and original 29 Sep 2007
By Bodlean
Format:Hardcover
You know when you see a place you know through new eyes? London as I never thought was possible. I've never read an 'English' novel that managed to straddle so many things, modern, personal, coming of age, fantasy, dark, and funny. Not quite the finished article just yet, but rich in all the right places, an original voice and one to watch

A modern day fairy tale, Nightdancing charts the course of a young couple's relationship as they set out on a new life in London. Dreams and reality are intricately woven to create a powerful, often haunting portrait of a flawed first love. Finely written and insightful, this is a fine debut from an emerging talent.
