5.0 out of 5 stars An all singing all dnacing region 2 release please!!!!, 14 Sep 2008
Ok, let's get the obvious said first: This film is not a patch on the original novel (Cabal); Clive Barker's cut was not released but a hastily re-edited version which gives away too much too soon and some of the acting is pretty poor but....I Love This Film! I don't even own a VHS player anymore but i still have this on video because I refuse to not have it.

For the reasons above this film is not a masterpiece and i freely admit it's five star rating is solely down to a peculiar fondeness I have for it.

Something about it got under my skin years ago and never let go. I think it's the mythology it creates - the concept of Midian enchants me - married to some awesome design (creatures and sets) and a typically stunning lates 80's Elfman score.

It's a marmite film, lots of people have hated it but many share my belief that it's a lost gem, worthy of a cult following.

It's a film that screamed SEQUEL too (as does the book btw). The ending really lends itself to continuation as it does not conclude the story completely.

What is soooo annoying it that there is region two release planned at present. We live in a world where you can buy the Nic Cage Wicker Man and Battlefiled Earth on DVD but not this?!?! There is certainly something amiss here.

I for one ask that the rights holders grantme a wish and release a full on special edition. Preferably incusive of Cliver Barkers original cut, which I am certain will be even better and may well keep the books darker ending, as well as the film i loved as a spotty teen. A full making of with tons of details about the set creation and monster creation would be great too.

Any chance???!?!!?

4.0 out of 5 stars Nightbreed, 24 April 2005
By A Customer
Nightbreed, although not available in this country is well worth a watch. If you like your monsters not to be what you expect and the visuals to be stunning this is a film for you. Based on Clive Barkers Cabal, it is so very close to the book that I was surprised, as normally they are just a distant relation to each other. Although the story is opened ended and you long to know what happens to the caracters it's still worth your time. Although eighties in feel it is not dated to much.
If you give it a go you will love this horror movie with a twist.
P.S look out for the insperation to the monsters in the Village. I think M Knight loves this film or it had an effect on his young mind.

3.0 out of 5 stars A HELLRAISER KNOCK OFF, 1 Nov 2007
By stuart "s.vernon" (MIDDLESBROUGH, ENGLAND) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
Aaron Boone, (Craig Sheffer) is plagued by nightmares of him killing people, and his psychiatrist, Dr. Phillip Decker, (David Cronenberg) tries to treat him. Still unconvinced, he tries to locate the place in his dreams, but encounters a race of monsters that are trying to keep their existence secret. When they eventually get him killed, his girlfriend Lori, (Anne Bobby) decides to go looking for him and encounters the monsters. Decker and Police Detective Joyce, (Hugh Quarshie) also find out that the monsters have Boone, and set out to find him. When the police track him down and show up to put a stop to the killing, Aaron leads the monsters against the invaders.

The Good News: Yet another film by Clive Barker in the "Hellraiser" vein, and while not as good, it does have some worthwhile moments. The creatures here are nicely designed and several are impressive on first sight. The make-up work is the best feature, as technically, it's quite striking with all the designs and creatures throughout the film. The ending showdown is quite action-packed and is a great high to end the film on. Explosions, gunfights and dead bodies galore fill the screen, leaving quite an impressive conclusion. The storyline for this is quite creative. It's creative and allows for some unusual and creative scenes. The high body count is also nice, as it results in some nice gore and death scenes.

The Bad News: I personally think this one is overrated. Even though the storyline is quite inventive and creative, the actual execution is a bit of a mess. It's almost impossible to decipher almost anything in here, as it never really explains motives or relationships until the end, so it's basically asking to keep all the questions until it decides to reveal them. While smart, that means that only the viewers who are used to clever plot-lines as the ones who enjoy this. The best part of the film is the ending, but up until then, there's really nothing that interesting to keep interest. A couple of deaths here and there are spread out through the movie, but so much is at the end that it can be hard to sit through the movie. That there was the movie's biggest fault: it's hard to sit through it if not in the mind frame to watch it. There's a sense of this trying to be a new "Hellraiser" but it also fails miserably. The effects look great, and there's a sense of them trying to have a similar personality, but the creatures are nowhere near as memorable as Pinhead and his friends.

The Final Verdict: While I feel it is overrated, there's still enough here to give it a look. It's not the best adaption of Barker's work, but it has enough fans to warrant a look. Give it a shot.
