Book Description

18 Sep 2007
Joe Trumble is a probation officer with a tragedy in his past. Two years ago his fiancee was brutally killed three days before their wedding. No one has yet been caught. As the story opens, Joe is heading for a blind date with Marlene, a jewellery designer, his first encounter with a woman since his late fiancee Laurel's death. The evening is a success, but next day Marlene is reported missing. Two days later her body is found. As the last person to see her alive, Joe is at the very least a material witness and, as the evidence mounts and another body is found, suspicion begins to centre on him.

Review

'Steve Hamilton has written several very good novels featuring the PI Alex McKnight. NIGHT WORK is a stand-alone book and another example of his fine storytelling... He deserves to be better known this side of the Atlantic.' (Susanna Yager Sunday Telegraph )

'This could be the big break-through book from an American writer who has been knocking on Michael Connelly and Harlan Coben's doors.' (Peterborough Evening Telegraph ) --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

I came across this book in a second hand store and was very glad to make its aquaintance. Having just read a couple of heavyweight biographies this book came as light relief and it is no criticism to say that I read it in a night it was that gripping. There are comparisons to be had with the recent output of Harlan Coben and Robert Crais (at least the non-series books) where the hero has to take on forces outside his control, not knowing who he can turn to for help. There is a genuinely suspenseful ending and the main characters, although thinly drawn, have enough in them to suggest that they can be expanded upon in the future and perhaps a more in depth follow up may ensue

5.0 out of 5 stars This one is for real 27 April 2012

I am a great fan of Steve Hamilton. I read all his books so far. This one did not get as great reviews (in the US) as his series of book about Alex McNight so I have been a little slow in starting to read it. I should not have been for this is a great novel. The Story is both easy to follow and at the same time complicated. There are no clues to who the villain is until at the very end. The Hero is a real person without super powers and a lot of personal luggage on his mind. The story flows forward very easy and it was hard for me to put this book down. The Only thing that could have been improved were that the end came very quick and not all your questions were answered but it is still a great book by a great author. Recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Same old same old 21 April 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
If you already like Hamilton, you will like this, but his style is starting to grate on me. You have the outsider, to whom a terrible thing has happened and who has only a few grizzled old confidantes, all of whom share manly, taciturn traits, and the sense of self pity, in which the reluctant hero blames himself for everything that goes wrong and who is driven by an urge to put things right.

This is similar to his Mcknight books in every respect, apart from the location.

As I say, if you like this stuff you will like this, possibly even love this, because it's all there, and what Hamilton is undeniably good at is forcing you to keep turning the page, way past your bedtime.
