Six entertaining short stories, each complete in themselves, but each adding to the lore of Kane. I first came across the Kane character in an anthology which contained 'Sing a Last Song of Valdese', the sixth story in Nightwinds. That story truly gripped me and on its own was enough to make me search out other Wagner books especially those adding to the history of Kane.
1. Undertow - What would you do to make immortality bearable. Make another immortal as a companion? But what would that immortal want?
2. Two Suns Setting - Finding the attention of jealous humans too much? Then travel with a pre-human giant for philosophy and adventure.
3. The Dark Muse - Friendship is rare enough for Kane that he'll take some unusual risks for a poetic friend, unusual even for him. What price art? Well the poet finds out.
4. Raven's Eyrie - Have you noticed that when things are going badly that is when they suddenly get much worse? Seems to be the same for immortals.
5. Lynortis Reprise - Even Kane can tire of senseless slaughter but what are his choices?
6. Sing a Last Song of Valdese - Lust and greed can lead to evil acts but can love lead to worse?
Kane: first murderer from the human race, rebelled against the god that created Man, consequently cursed to live forever unless he himself is violently killed, after several lifetimes of boredom and frustration he isn't inclined to suffer fools or enemies gladly, and it's dangerous enough being Kane's friend let alone his enemy. He's picked up a few skills over his lifetimes: mage, warrior, assassin, general, pirate, priest, bandit but most of all he's a killer. His ambitions lead him to mix with the class of person that you might think deserve Kane's attentions. Unlucky for them. That's what makes the stories entertaining....
