I heard this with my wife and son whilst we were wandering around a music store in Trondheim and we were all immediately captivated by the purity and clarity of the vocals. Having bought the CD and listened to it several times it has already become a firm favourite. We don't have the emotional baggage of many of the reviewers - this was the first we had hesrd of her music (although I now reaise she sang the beautiful outro in the wonderful Wallander series). OK the alt country / folk style may not be to everyone's taste, and I have certainly heard lyrics which have moved me much more strongly, but if you like clear pure vocals with wonderfully-played but understated backing I cannot see how you would be disappointed. Yes, some of the songs are simple and pretty, but everything doesn't have to be edgy, biting or emotionally scarring - there is a role for soothing and calming too. Definitely reommended!

The difficult thing in listening to music is to hear it as it really is, with fresh ears, rather than as we would like it to be. This is of course difficult if you already know an artist's earlier work, and we all bring our own unique emotional blueprint, expectations and experiences to our listening. On this album there is music that will enchant you with its simple purity and clarity if you will only let it. I find an inner calm and collectedness that I would not equate with blandness, rather it is a state that is reached after having been through a few storms. My sense here is that for this album Anna had to strip herself of her own baggage and lose herself in order to find herself again. The result for me is more consistently satisfying than what she did on previous albums even if they may have had more obvious standout tracks. Here the writing, singing, playing and production all come together to provide a complete whole with no superfluous bits or extraneous effects, the result of which is a more naturally focused sound where nothing seems forced or stilted. For me this is an example of a recording that works specifically as an album rather than as just a collection of individual songs, something that is increasingly rare these days. Anna manages to sustain the rapt atmosphere right through 12 songs and 40 odd minutes, which I consider to be no mean achievement.

I was certainly a bit concerned prior to this album's release that the sombre introspection of Anna Ternheim's earlier CDs might have been somewhat altered by spending time in Nashville. As it turns out, I needn't have worried. The "Night Visitor" does have a more "country" sound than before, but the lyrical themes are familiar, as are the sparse but beautiful vocals. For one, I'm grateful that Anna Ternheim continues to be inspired by different types of music, subtly incorporating them into her own music. rather than simply trying to second guess what fans might like, and churn albums out without the same amount of care as before. Having a slight Nashville tint to the music was not a commercial decision, but an artistic one. I'm glad to be challenged, rather than be provided, like a spoiled child, with exactly the same flavour ice-cream as before.

And yes, if you can see her during this Night Visitor tour, you must go!

As one Swedish newspaper review put it, this is probably a "future classic".
