Reviews

Kawalerowicz's celebrated film is considered one of the finest achievements of Polish cinema. Employing a classic Hitchcockian premise - two people, one possibly a killer on the run, sharing a compartment on a crowded overnight train - Kawalerowicz turns a thriller into an intriguing character study of ordinary people in unusual circumstances.

Featuring impressive performances from Lucyna Winnicka (Mother Joan of the Angels), Zbigniew Cybulski (the 'Polish James Dean') and Leon Niemczyk (Knife in the Water), Night Train is more than simply a thriller...taut and gripping but also suffused with humour and warmth and boasting a wonderful jazz score by renowned composer Andrzej Trzaskowski.

"Kawalerowicz's masterwork...visually magnificent"
Bright Lights Film Journal

"A superbly taut thriller, constantly challenging its audience...the tension is unbearable and well handled at all times"

"Night Train" (Pociag) is a story about a man and a woman who have to share a compartment on a train even though they would rather be alone. They both want their privacy so they speak to each other in riddles. Because they share very few details with each other, it takes a long time to figure out who they really are and what they are up to.

There is more to the story than mere strangers sharing a room. Some passengers envision romantic possibilities as they ride the train though the night. An otherwise uneventful ride is broken up by the excitement of authorities searching the train for a man who supposedly killed his wife. Many of the passengers get excited and create a witch-hunt. When the man she got to know is accused of being the killer, their interactions take new meaning and test their brief friendship.

Jerzy Kawalerwicz, who has considerable talent, directs "Night Train." As with his other films, such as "Mother Joan of Angels," "Austria," and "Quo Vadis," "Night Train" is exceptional. All in all, "Night Train" creates a romantic feeling, with its play on drama and jazzy music that ties it all together. The movie is a drama that borders on being a thriller. The story, presentation, and music are memorable and captivating.

An interesting movie from the well know director Jerzy Kawalerowicz. Filmed almost entirely on train the excellent photography conveys the claustrophobic atmosphere and the unavoidable proximity of the passengers. Despite it being disguised as a mystery thriller, it is actually a study of human emotions, relationships, loneliness and the lack of communication.
Kawalerowicz international fame followed his movie 'Mother Joan of the Angels' made in 1961 (with the same actress of 'Night Train', Lucyna Winnicka.)

Not many people who are not Polish themselves know how ahead of their time Polish film makers were. This is just one example. Cybulski's role in this is not that big. This is before he was a huge star he would later be. A night train becomes it's own universe during the night. Well done.
