Keane - Strangeland

Biography

As problems go, this is among the nicer ones. Tim Rice-Oxley clicks a playlist on his computer. This is where all the contenders for the final tracklisting of Keane’s new album sit in quarantine. Over the past few months, band members have made the case for their favourites; friends have chipped in with their opinions. But, as the band gather round Tim’s computer, another click takes us to the… Read more in Amazon's Keane Store

BBC Review

"Everybody's changing, and I don't feel the same," Keane told us back in 2004. Damn right. From Night Train's ominous opening soundscape House Lights, this stop-gap mini-album marks new territory for the East Sussex trio. They've a rapper in tow for two tracks and a Japanese baile funk MC poppet for another (a cover of Yellow Magic Orchestra's Ishin Denshin), while Your Love features keyboardist/songwriter Tim Rice-Oxley's first lead vocal. At just 31 minutes Night Train is as brief as it is startling. Well, startling to a Keane fan, but then we were hardly going to be in Sun Ra territory here, were we?

Maybe it's in the nature of how these tracks were recorded–time snatched at studios around the world while on tour–but there's less constancy to Night Train than previous albums, even though it takes a lead from the 80s pop of 2008's Perfect Symmetry. Your Love's eye-watering keyboards has the band camped in Wang Chung's foothills, the Bond theme-in-waiting Back in Time and closing My Shadow are as expansive as ever yet stripped of the cloying sentimentality that so often sees Keane made into critical whipping boys, and Looking Back is (ahem) "inspired" by the Rocky theme.

Most startling, however, is the appearance of a rapper on Stop for a Minute and Looking Back. This being Keane it's the right-on and conscious Canadian protest poet K'Naan rather than anyone actually, you know, dangerous; but to their credit it's not Chaplin rapping, which could only have led to a Robbie Williams-style cringe-fest.

Over three albums Keane have never quite shaken the impression that they could run out of steam at any moment, amplified by the fragile nature of the school friends' relationship in light of singer Tom Chaplin's well-documented substance abuse. As a transitional release, however, Night Train points to an even bigger and brighter future: it mostly sounds like a band happy to enjoy the freedom of chalking up 10 million album sales, and everyone else can take a running jump. --Andy Fyfe

My Boys Are Back 15 May 2010
Format:Audio CD
I've been a huge fan of Keane since the release of their second album "Under The Iron Sea". 3 albums (+1 "mini album/EP") in, and I'm still pretty much in love with them. The recently released Night Train EP is just as brilliant as their previous works.

I'll start with the songs I really really like:
1. Your Love - This has got to be THE BEST song of the EP. Tim's vocal, the music in general and the lyrics, all of them are perfect!
2. Stop For A Minute - I noticed that a lot of people don't enjoy the rap in this song. I myself am not a hip & hop fan, but I find the rap in SFAM not bad at all! Definitely a keeper.
3. Clear Skies - This song reminds me of the pre-Hopes & Fears Keane (when they were still a 4 piece "proper" rock band with guitar and bass). Definitely different from Keane's "signature" sound, but not less enjoyable.
4. My Shadow - Not a new song, heard it before. It has a great cinematic feel to it. Quintessentially Keane.

The "in betweener" (I don't really like it, but I don't dislike it either)
5. Looking Back - I don't find it special. Plus, the Rocky-esque hornline sounds kind of awkward to me.

The songs I don't like:
6. Back In Time - Apparently a fan favourite, but I'm sorry to say that I don't like the grating synth intro.
7. Ishin Denshin - IMO this is a result of them trying too hard.

8. House Lights - Not a proper song, so no comments.

Overall, I'm happy with way the EP turns out. Keane are brave enough to experiment with new sounds, regardless whether they succeed in it or not. And I applaud them for that.

Not so Keane! 14 Jun 2010

I love Keane and have all their albums, all of which I really love. This is a good EP, particularly love the songs "Back in Time" and "Looking Back". However, not being a huge fan of rap, I am disappointed that Keane have decided to go down this route. I also found some of the spoken rapping/lyrics by K'naan on these 2 tracks a little silly and pointless - i.e. something about "mixing milk with lime(!?)", "tears going back into my eyes and then I die" etc etc. If the words made some sort of sense it would have been better, as they are, I just think they seem unnecessary and have obviously just been written cos all the words rhyme with each other. It almost like Keane have given up and passed the buck onto other people to help them out! I don't think Keane need to colaborate with anyone else on their songs, as they are a great band in their own right and hope this is not going to be the start of things to come. Hope they bring another new album out soon (on their own)! I would recommend this EP/album as easy listening, but its not a patch on Hopes and Fears or Under the Iron Sea.

Nothing Special 29 May 2010
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Despite being a Keane fan, I must admit that I am quite disappointed with this EP. It is nowhere near as good as the ''Hopes & Fears'' or ''Perfect Symetry'' albums.
There is even a song that starts off like the theme tune to the ''Rocky'' films...........Well dodgy! I am also not keen (or should that be Keane)on the tracks that feature other artists especially rap artists.
For the next Album I hope that Keane go back to their old school ways. Fingers crossed!

a fine album - much underrated
This was another fine album by Keane - albeit a mini-one/EP. The rapper K'naan adds something different to the 2 songs (Stop for a minute & Looking Back). Both good songs. Read more
