Simply Epic! 7 Aug 2008
By George
Format:Audio CD
This is one of the best Iced Earth albums. Probably one of the best epic metal albums ever recorded. It was the first Iced Earth record I ever listened to, and it still inspires the same feelings 16 years later. John Greely's performance is amazing. And that's what makes this album so unique. I was actually annoyed when John Greely was replaced by Matt Barlow and never understood why. Later covers of songs with Barlow on the mic do not seem to be as haunting as the originals. But Matt was amazing in some of his performances too.

The technique, the production, the chemistry, all work great in this recording to make it one of the best (in my humble opinion) metal albums ever.

My favourite songs are

Angels Holocaust, Stormrider (where some of the vocals come from John Schaffer himself), Path I Choose, Before the Vision, Mystical End, Desert Rain, Pure Evil, Reaching the End, and Travel in Stygian :D

Highly recommended.

I was shocked to find no customer review for this title, arguably Iced Earth's finest hour (just beating Burnt Offerings); and so felt compelled to write one. Released back in 1992 now this album has easily stood the test of time and hence the deserved classic mantle! A concept cd about a pathway to hell and the choices taken, this is a dark and thrashy metal journey containing some of Jon's heaviest riffs to date. The songs contain many twists and turns as you're swept off on a full metal gallop from beginning to end.

As with all great cd's the strength is from the fact all songs are top-notch and each with their individual moments. This is represented justly by Night of the Stormrider: the choral chanting intro to 'Angels holocaust', the electric riffing of 'Stormrider', the aggression of 'Path I choose' or the fabulous metal gems of 'Desert rain' and 'Pure evil'. The final track is a nine minute belter and my favourite I.E., hell even favourite metal song ever. The closing piano outro has a haunting feel that epitomises this great album.

There is a hidden dark depth to it too which keeps the music interesting no matter how many times you listen. I've yet to get bored with this after many years! If you're a fan of metal, especially moody atmospheric metal with riffs to melt your ears then seriously consider this!

This is Great... 29 Sep 2007
Format:Audio CD
On hearing this album you will notice big difference in vocals (rather than later Iced Earth, vocalist currently being Tim Owens), as John Greely took up the mic in '92 for this album as Schaffer was looking for more of a melodic singer...
This album is out of all fairness an overlooked epic juggernaunt of an album, with the opening haunting chants of 'Angels Holocaust' to the meaty charge of Schaffer sung 'Stormrider' and the epic 9 minute closer 'Travel in Stygian, probably my favourite metal song (but better with matt berlow on vocals). This album is an album that you need to hear, it will consume your very being and you will love every second of it.
