I picked up a copy of this book at a local garden center as I was interested in learning about the night sky. After finishing chapter 1 I went out and purchased a pair of 10x50s and now can be found at night in the garden staring up at the night sky with this book by my side.
It covers everything from the basics of astronomy to a detailed guide of the most interesting constellations.
Included are some excellent star maps which show a map with all important features noted opposite a photo-like reproduction which really helps to learn the star patterns. After a few nights you'll be able to point out various features.
All in all a very interesting and well written book which you will return to time after time.

Althought computer based star atlases have taken some of the thunder from traditional, printed, Star Atlases such as the Phillips, there is still room for the printed version, especially for those who do not have access to relatively expensive laptops and powered telescopes. There is, in my opinion, some credibility in the argument that printed star atlases form a better base for the novice astronomer to build on. There is plenty to digest when the night is cloudy!
Our twelve year old prefers the Phillips atlas maps to others, such as the Nortons, although such matters are down to personal preference.
