3.0 out of 5 stars Third in the trilogy 16 Dec 2010
By NOMAD
Subtitled - very clear. World War II - Chinese troops against Japanese troops. Based on a true story - good action war film. Most of the action is about trying to destroy a Japanese airfield with huge explosions, total mayhem! Recommended. At this price why miss it!

2.0 out of 5 stars Where is Mao? 23 Mar 2011

This has to be one of the strangest trilogies I have seen.

The three films:
Axis Of War: The First Of August [DVD] [2008]
Axis Of War: My Long March [DVD] [2008]
and this one

don't really fit together, the first two cover key moments in the history of the Red Army but this one seems like an afterthought.

Production value in all 3 movies is high, nothing lacking in scenery, uniforms or details and obviously had a good budget. Sadly this does not show in the CGI effects, mostly aircraft.

But where it fails is the script and direction. You feel like you are watching a very old movie and realism is thrown out. In fact in the opening scene where the KTM (Kuomintang) and CPC (Communist) troops brawl over possession of a train it reminds me of a song and dance film from the 60s.

In this film the hated enemies of the first series, the KMT & CPC, are brought together to battle their common enemy the Japanese. Again here nothing is spared in uniforms and Japanese actors play their respective parts - which in itself is interesting and would not have been easily possible a few years back. It all cumulates in a final battle against a Japanese Airfield.

Thankfully we do not get any Mao propaganda as in the two previous films but I was rather expecting this to be the unifying element of the three films.

Small scope warfare similiar to The Great Raid [DVD] [2005] but let down by very old fashioned direction and storytelling.

After seeing such a brilliant Chinese war movie as Assembly [2007] [DVD] I frankly was expecting much more.

On a small technical note, the visual transfer is good but there is something wrong with the sound, there is an irritating background noise.

My recommendation is give the Axis of War Trilogy a miss and if you want to see an excellent Chinese war movie go for Assembly.

Reminds me about my youth (I am 77) so I do remember the war.
The war in the east was very bad.
I recomend this to younger peaple, so they never let it happen again
