Book Description

In this new stand alone novella from New York Times bestselling author Laini Taylor comes the story of a funny and fantastical first date. In NIGHT OF CAKE & PUPPETS, Taylor brings to life a night only hinted at in the Daughter of Smoke & Bone trilogy - the magical first date of fan-favorites Zuzana and Mik. Told in alternating perspectives, it's the perfect love story for fans of the series and new readers alike. The novella also contains an extract from the first book in the series: Daughter of Smoke and Bone.

Petite though she may be, Zuzana is not known for timidity. Her best friend, Karou, calls her 'rabid fairy', her 'voodoo eyes' are said to freeze blood, and even her older brother fears her wrath. But when it comes to the simple matter of talking to Mik, or 'Violin Boy', her courage deserts her. Now, enough is enough. Zuzana is determined to meet him, and she has a fistful of magic and a plan. It's a wonderfully elaborate treasure hunt of a plan that will take Mik all over Prague on a cold winter's night before finally leading him to the treasure: herself!

Violin Boy's not going to know what hit him.

5.0 out of 5 stars Daughter of Smoke and Bone book 1.5 21 July 2014
By Sarah (Feeling Fictional) TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Kindle Edition
I have loved Zuzana from the very first book, she is such a fantastic character and I love the fact that no matter what happens she always has Karou's back. I can never get enough of strong female friendships and theirs has been a favourite since the beginning. I also completely and utterly adore Mik, it's so nice to come across a fictional guy who isn't an overbearing alpha who wants to control everything his girlfriend does. Mik couldn't be further from that if he tried, he's sweet, sensitive, laid back and able to cope with whatever Zuze throws at him. He's ready to roll with the punches and although he may not be a fighter he would do anything to make Zuze happy. The two of them together have given me some of my highlights of the whole series so I couldn't have been more excited to discover Laini Taylor had written an extra story that focuses entirely on them.

We've come to know them quite well as a couple throughout the series but until now we never got to see their first date and how they ended up getting together in the first place. This story fits into the series timeline somewhere during Daughter of Smoke and Bone so can be read at any point after you've read the first book. I'm going to deliberately keep this review pretty vague because I would hate to ruin the magic of it for anyone who is yet to read it. Just trust me, Laini Taylor fans will LOVE this story, it has everything you would expect from this author - beautiful writing, wonderful characterisation and more than a touch of magic.

Zuze is such a quirky character so I'm sure you wouldn't expect her to go on any kind of normal, boring first date but the adventure she plans for Mik is nothing short of magical.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wish there was more of it 29 Nov. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I loved Zuzana in the main story, especially in Daughter of Smoke and Bone and i was overjoyed when her and Mik started as a couple after you first learning about him described as Violin Boy, the boy she tells Karou that she has a crush on. I adored the two of them together in Nights of Blood and Starlight and thought that they kept the story very grounded and human, much as they do for Karou. They are simply too cute together and Mik is every girls dream guy.
When I first heard that there was going to be a novella about the two of them describing the night they got together I was very excited. I know that novellas are meant to be short stories but I just didn't want this story to end. I thought that Zuzana was a very good narrator and wouldn't have minded to hear a little bit more of her point of view regarding Karou's situation, particularly her feelings on Akiva. I really hope Laini Taylor does more with her as a narrator and that hers and Mik's relationship doesn't get lost in the mayhem which is going to be happening in the third book of the series. I would hate for Zuzana to be pushed to the side in favour of the fantasy element of the series.

I love Laini Taylor's writing. It scoops you up and flings you around and feeds you magical cupcakes, straight into your eyes. In a really nice way. I'm so glad this was left out of the main book so it had its own space to breathe. It's just lovely.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great side story to DoSaB 20 April 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I had been wondering what that night was like after the mention of it in DoSaB. What a beautifully written, beautifully imagined tale of Zuse and Mik. A must-read for anyone who loves those two characters (and honestly, who wouldn't?).

I'd been looking forward to reading this, but wasn't sure whether it could be as wonderful as Laini's full length novels.

Well, it is! It's every bit as good ... just shorter.

This sweetly magical tale of Zuzana and Mik is imaginative and spikily-cute in a sort of "rabid fairy" way. It's atmospheric, with imagery that makes me want to cry (and then write something just as wonderful), which is how I always feel after reading Laini's writing.

There is a secrecy and mystery within the snowy streets of Prague, a perfect backdrop for Zuzana's magical evening. I can almost hear the near-silent hiss of snow as it continues to fall around me...

A fantastic short read. Dreams of Gods and Monsters next!

2.0 out of 5 stars Night of cake and puppets 11 Aug. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Not sure whether this book was supposed to come before the trilogy or after. I read it after and although it added a little more depth and background it only took me a couple of hours on a lazy day off work to read. I have to be honest it left me a bit flat...... I was disappointed to find Daughter of Smoke and Bone (which I really enjoyed) stuck on the end like an appendage :-( I understand the reason to advertise in this manner but I wouldn't have bought the trilogy had I read this first. I hope people who enjoy this type of fictitious release aren't put off buying the trilogy as that would be a tragedy.

This book is everything I hoped it would be and really shows off Laini Taylor's writing ability. I have always loved the characters of Zuzanna and Mik and I assume other fans of The daughter of smoke and bone series were too, as a result I think this book is a wonderful little companion to the series.
